Runway Toons! Better late...

Darlings, blame this one on us. We were so late getting the script for these funnies to Alex that he barely had any time to put this together. Trooper that he is, he sketched like mad to get this back to us even though he's in the middle of having his store renovated. Let's give it up for Alex!

(Click, bitches!)

Ironically, our good friend George, also a fabulous artist, came up with almost exactly the same joke. Check out his version.

Team Sweet Rami

Kittens, let's pretend for a moment that there's any real possibility that Rami might not make it to the final 3. It's hard, we know, but just play along. Pretend he's not the judges' little wankfantasy golden boy.

If that were the case, then he should be bowing down to Sweet P and begging her forgiveness for saving his superbly shaped ass after he treated her so badly.

Because this:

Was heinous.

And this:

Was gorgeous.

Still hate those shoes, though.

Look, Sweet P has not exactly been wowing the judges and she's been treating every challenge like it's the most difficult thing she ever faced. From that perspective, we can see why Rami wasn't exactly thrilled to be paired with her. We can even see why he felt she needed to be "managed." But there's managing and then there's being a prick.

Sure, she gets flustered easily and she doesn't manage her time well, but the absolute worst way to handle someone like that is to badger and berate them to death. Give them clear goals and timelines and then step back and let them do their work. Don't get them even more upset and flustered by nitpicking them to death.

If there were slightly different judging criteria, in a weird way, Sweet P could have been the winner. We know that sounds crazy, but hear us out.

The avant garde look was pure Rami. There was nothing of Sweet P in this design and frankly, there should have been because her work tends to have more of an edge to it. His work is way too classically oriented to even approach the idea of "avant garde."

On the other hand...

Her ready-to-wear piece was not only beautiful, it also represented a melding of their two styles. She produced, under very stressful circumstances, a beautiful garment that blended two very different aesthetics.

He bulldozed any opposition out of the way and produced something that wasn't avant garde, wasn't beautiful and wasn't anything but his own selfish take on things. When Tim critiqued it in the workroom, Rami's only defense was "You've never seen me do corsets before."

We ask you, who was the better designer here?

Yes, Rami. You can drape. Even moist Nina has had enough of that. There's just a ton of crap here that serves no purpose. It's not pretty and it's not interesting. It's "throw everything at the dress form and see if it sticks." We get where he was coming from - it does sort of look like the model's hair - but it just didn't come off.

And the pants, dear GOD, THE PANTS. Make it STOP. Granted, it looks like Sweet P was a hundred percent behind the pants idea (not to mention she did a terrible job on them), so we have to be fair and criticize them both for this straight-outta-2003 choice.

And Alberta Ferretti was right. There's just not enough volume in that skirt to balance out their other choices.

Oh, it hurts.

This, on the other hand, was just perfect. We would be very surprised if Sweet P made it to the end, but it's to her credit that her work keeps getting better and better.

There's not a thing we can criticize about this dress. The color, the fabric, the execution, the proportions - all just perfect. Love it.

Let's face it, Rami's got "Bryant Park" written all over him and Sweet P's got the stench of an impending auf'ing on the wind. We would be very surprised if she made it to the end, not because she's not a good designer but because she doesn't seem to be at her best in this kind of competition. Still, it would have seriously pissed us off if they sent her home just to spare Mr. Perfect. Don't get us wrong. We like Rami and we'd like to see him strut his stuff at Bryant Park, but he did not come off well this week at all.

Team Victor-ian

Oh, the DRAMA of fashion design, darlings!

A seething, roiling red hot soup of creativity and ambition abounds!

Designers who would chew off their own feet for a chance at real success!

A creative process that reduces the most hardened vets to tears!

A backstabbing arena where one false move means CAREER DEATH!

Histrionics! Screaming! Plotting!

Or, y'know...not.

Considering the complete lack of drama (or any real emotion) on this team...

...they sure as hell produced a dramatic look.

This was stunning. It wasn't exactly what we could call original (and therefore, not avant garde) as it owes so much to previous designs by Westwood and Gaultier, but for sheer impact, this was a tough look to beat.

Unfortunately for Team Spock, Christian and Chris managed to pull out something even more dramatic and they were relegated to second place.

Also unfortunate were the choices they made for the secondary garments. That blouse and those jodhpurs are not only "bleh" in terms of design, but they're surprisingly poorly executed. Surprising because they appear to have been entirely VictorYA's contribution. Does this mean that Jillian is better at executing a look than VictorYA is? Darlings, you make the call.

The coat itself is so striking and the pink tartan such an unusal choice that it's a bit of a disppointment to look down and see what looks like khaki capris peeking out the bottom. It's like on the outside she's all "Paris! Milan!" and underneath she's all "Pick up the kids at soccer practice!"

And the back of it is AWFUL.

Dear GOD, kittens. What is THAT?

As for the ready-to-wear dress, it was cute.

It really doesn't seem to owe much to the other piece, though. Just because it's the same color doesn't make it a RTW version of the garment.

The little hint of the pink tartan was, again, cute but this dress had none of the severity and dramatic impact of the coat. It was just a dress with a cute pink ruffle.

Again, it surprises us to say this, but any consideration they received from the judges was due entirely to Jillian's contribution. We don't know if that coat is something she designed previous to the show or something she returned to afterwards, but it's clearly a look in her repertoire now.

As for VictorYA, she was definitely off her game this week. We're not sure why. Maybe she just didn't want to be on another team. Or maybe she was thrown off by her team mate being able to go longer than she can without moving her face.

The Bridesmaid Curse Strikes Again!

See? We point out that a talented designer isn't getting any love from the judges and what happens? What ALWAYS HAPPENS?

Darlings, we must learn to use our special powers for good.

But kittens, perhaps you can answer something for us because we're a little confused.

If Kit was the team leader and for the most part Ricky was a decent team mate without any drama and they used her design and went with her fabric choices...

Why is everyone so pissed off at Ricky because she went home?

Because honeys, this:

Is a frigging disaster.

On the one hand, this seems to be the only design this week that isn't totally derivative of some other designer's work. On the other hand, who the fuck considers aprons and hoop skirts avant garde?

And WHAT is with those FABRICS? It's like Little House on the Prairie suffered a high speed head-on collision with Gone With the Wind and this is the bloody and possibly brain damaged result.

Seriously, those are some of the worst fabric choices we've ever seen. They look like old bed linens. Where did all the money go on this one?

Supposedly, she was going for a "bird's nest, girl-in-a-garden" concept, but we can't see any evidence of it here.

The only thing that's even slightly interesting about it is that detail on the back of the skirt but it's kind of strange to conceptualize a hoop skirt as a "walking away" dress.

It's so weird. We're not sure if Kit or Ricky really has an understanding of what avant garde actually means, but this ain't it. It fails on every level. It didn't reflect her stated concept; it wasn't avant garde or forward-thinking in any way; the choice of bland, underwhelming fabrics worked against whatever visual drama a hoop skirt provides; and to top it all off, it wasn't particularly well executed.

As for the ready to wear...

Remember in Season 2 when they had the Barbie challenge and at the last minute Tim told them that they had to make an outfit for the Barbie as well and most of the designers just said "Fuck it" and stapled fabric scraps to their dolls and the results were so heinous that the judges never even mentioned them?

Yeah.

It's kinda like that.

The angry mob with torches and pitchforks on the internet seems to think that Ricky should have gone home this week but that really sounds like they're seeking payment for past offenses. He did nothing to warrant being auf'd. Personally, we feel that Kit is the better designer of the two of them, but that's how the game is played. You make one wrong move (and don't provide enough drama for the producers) and it's auf wiedersehen, baby. This was her concept and it just didn't work.

Or as Alberta sez...

"It's chip. It's chip in a chip way."

Thank you, Alberta! That was very dip.
