One we loved and two we absolutely HATED

Y'know, we've given Andrae a lot of grief in the past, but credit where credit's due, this is a really beautiful dress.

It's feminine, chic and understated, which is ironic because we wouldn't have used ANY of those words to describe his previous entries. It's also beautifully fitted. The bodice hugs her just enough and the skirt flows beautifully. Kudos to him for not going overboard on the detailing, offering just enough sparkle to bump it up without overwhelming.

We love the trim on the bust and the double straps too (although they don't look so hot from the back), which could have come off gimmicky but doesn't . The way the fabric gathers and droops in the back is sexy and makes this as much a "walking away" dress as it is a "walking toward" dress. Nice job, drama queen.

JESUS.

What a stunningly ugly dress this is. Zulema, enough with the white and black. It's boring as hell. The leather is too heavy to be paired with whatever that fabric is she used for the rest of the dress. We kept thinking poor Rachel was going to fall over.

It's once again an amazingly poorly constructed garment. Amazing because she's still in the game after sending so many half-assed (or in one case, full-assed) garments down the runway. Not that perfect execution would have saved this dress. It's an ugly design no matter how well it's put together.

A simple "Jesus" won't suffice here. We're afraid we're going to have to call down Mary and Joseph on this one too.

Let's get this out of the way first. We really feel sorry for Marla. She's in WAY over her head and she knows it. We can't remember when she said it but she admitted at one point that she'd never seen the show before. We have no idea what she sells in her boutique or whether it's any good but based on her work on the show, she is, sorry to say, not a designer at all.

Because a designer (at least one competing in a design competition) would have never attempted what she did here. It's really stunning to look at the two dresses side by side. They're almost indistinguishable.

And God, Marla. If you're going to rip off a dress, at least rip off a dress that isn't hideously ugly to start with.

We met Marla once and she's a very sweet, friendly woman, but she never should have been allowed to stay after this. As ugly as Lupe's dress was, it was in fact, Lupe's design and that should have counted for more because as we said, this is a design competition, not a sewing competition. And frankly, Marla wouldn't even have been able to win a sewing competition. It's harsh (and we're surprised Señora Harsh herself didn't say this), but she really does not belong here.

Three More We Liked

Y'know, almost everyone brought their A game this week because there were an unusually high number of good entries.

This is a reversal of the normal Project Runway blogging phenomenon known as recap/rethink. Normally, when we have to rethink a garment it's because we thought it looked good until we took screencaps.

In the case of Emmett's dress, we were pleasantly surprised to discover that it's a lot prettier than we'd realized. Sure, the design is pretty basic, but it's fitted perfectly and that fabric is absolutely gorgeous.

Having been in his store a couple times now, we're not sure we'd say this about the current Emmett aesthetic (which tends to be more classic and tailored), but during the competition he was working a "cute 'n girly" vibe big time. This dress is the definition of both. The only problem is, "cute 'n girly" is not what one thinks of when one thinks of a Hilton sister. Plus, we get the impression that this is not a particularly photographable (shut up, it's a word) dress, which would have to be a requirement for someone like Skanky Hilton.

Now this is a classic recap/rethink. It's still pretty, but looking at the pictures we're not sure why it was considered such a contender. First off, it's way too basic - to the point that it looks like something you could pick up in any chain dress shop in America.

Second, the color is ... kinda tacky. Santino and Nick picked cool, sophisticated blues to set of Skanky's eyes. This? This is more of a prom dress blue. Too bright, too shiny, not very chic.

Third, it wasn't executed all that well. The bust is really poorly fitted and there's puckery going on all over the place, which is somewhat surprising because Chloe had a rep for perfectly executed garments.

Yeah, the braid is nice, but if that's the only good thing you can say about it, then the dress isn't all that great.

Now this, THIS is how you do "basic." This dress is gorgeous and dramatic.

We don't lovelovelove the cut on the skirt. Empire waists tend to make even 90 lb. models look a little bottom heavy, so we question the idea of making the skirt even fuller than it needed to be. Two things save it from looking like a fat dress: the bodice is perfectly fitted and because the top of the dress is so body-conscious (i.e., tight), it gave Kara a little wiggle room to go crazy on the skirt.

Second: girl knows what she's doing because the skirt flows beautifully. We also like the straps on the back. We can understand why this wasn't picked. Like Emmett's, it's probably a little too sophisticated for Skanky and because there's a potential of making her look fat in pictures, it really wouldn't work for her. As a standard party dress for the type of gal that doesn't have to worry about Page Six? Perfect.

Three We Liked

We've got a lot of catching up to do, Poodles!

Hot. Hot to death. Daniel's been pretty underwhelming up till now, but this was his breakout dress. Love the bustline and the straps.

And we love the way he used the print, layering it to get exactly the effect he wanted. Never let the fabric do all the work, poodles. Work it.

Hmmm. That hem doesn't look so hot.

It's probably a little tighter than it needs to be because it's giving Rebecca a little tummy bump and we seriously doubt she has one. In a way, none of that really matters because Daniel certainly passed the "wing it" test with flying colors this week. He basically pulled this dress out of his ass at the last minute. We've seen other designers in the same predicament but they never produced a dress as hot as this one.

Okay, yes. It is a little Stevie Nicks. But in a good way.

We love the bodice and the alternating strips of fabric she used for it. Not super-crazy about the Batman neck line or the extraneous...stuff she's got going on up there. The belt's cute and the buckle sets it off just enough without being distracting.

If she could have just edited the skirt a little bit, this would have been a much hotter dress. Diana's got an eye for the flowy, kinetic fabrics but there's just way too much of it here. Yes, it flowed beautifully but she looked like she was shoplifting a basketball.

Hmmm. We like it but we don't love it.

It's pretty, but it's also pretty standard. It's a beautiful color and we like the beads at the shoulders, but this could have seriously used something to bump it up a notch. And a fishtail hem just isn't enough in this case. There's also something a little off with the fit. Things look a little puckery and it's not hugging her curves the way it should.

Granted, it's definitely a "walking away" dress and the back is more interesting than the front. It would have looked great on Nicky Hilton and that's saying something 'cuz girl's a skank.

Edited to add: The dress Nick had made for Nicky Hilton on this challenge was worn by Brenda Strong of Desperate Housewives for the SAG Awards. Here's Nick's post about it.

S2/E5: Congratulations, Santino!

Quickie recap: The designers have to design a party dress for Nicky Hilton, who will pick the winner after viewing them at probably the tamest party she ever attended. You can read Tim's take on this episode here and listen to his podcast here.

This is definitely a case of recap/rethink. We always ...if not exactly liked the dress, could see why it won and had no problem with the win. Once we got the screencaps though, we have to say this ain't all that hot a frock.

The color's pretty and the braiding was kind of nice, but that's about it in the plus column.

Yow. That's a lotta junk going on there and most of it doesn't look particularly well executed. He never knows when to stop throwing stuff at the dress form. And once again, there's only the barest hint of a female form under 20 pounds of fabric.

We wouldn't mind the skirt so much since it flowed and moved so beautifully, but it was way too full and like everything Santino's made so far, makes a 98-pound model look like red beans and rice didn't miss her.

It seems to us that he won this for the same reason he's still in the competition: jaded seen-it-alls atwitter over someone acting "outrageous." Granted, Nicky was probably trying to hit him up for some coke, but she was all over him like white on rice. Credit where credit's due, part of the challenge was to sell yourself and no one came close to Santino on that score. He worked it to his advantage but in our opinion, the dress wasn't all that much to write home about.
