Daniel V & Nick: Recap/Rethink

We always hated this outfit, but looking at the screencaps, we wound up liking it a little more than we thought. Don't get us wrong, we're not crazy about it, but we don't hate it anymore.

The color's pretty and the basic design is fine, if a little...well, basic.

TERRIBLE styling.

Not supercrazy about the trim on the bust. Certainly, the garment needed some sort of trim or embellishment, but this seems a little too heavy.

And the whole thing is puckery and very noticeably so since the fabric is shiny.

Still, with a little more time and some tweaking, this could have been a really sharp costume.

Well let's get this out of the way first: like our thoughts on handkerchief hems, we very rarely think asymmetrical busts look good. No matter how beautiful the garment or how well-executed, we always wind up thinking the wearer looks like she's got a touch of scoliosis.

We always had this one filed in the "pretty but bland" drawer, but looking at it again, it's really much prettier than we thought. Delicate and feminine, it would look great on the ice, except for one thing: the fabric.

Tootie!

Don't get us wrong, it's a very pretty fabric. In fact, it's the best looking fabric out of all the entries. It'd be great for a party or red carpet dress, but it seems like it would wash out on the ice.

Granted, so would Zulema's but hers was a much more dramatic (and dramatically ugly) costume, so it would likely still have impact in the nosebleed seats. This, we're not so sure would register. Even from the relatively close vantage point in these shots, a lot of the fantastic detail kind of fades out.

Look at that skirt. That is really beautifully constructed - and we'd never even noticed the back on this thing before.

Honestly? Looking at these pictures, we're going to have to amend our previous position. Chloe's was nice, but this was the best entry. If only that fabric was in a more impactful shade.

Justify My Dance Recital

Here's what we find so annoying about Andrae: he can't just complete the task at hand; he has to make some sort of grandstanding statement all the time.

Which is fine, but this is a reality show competition and it's just not the place for you to be crying about past failures, making a statement on standards of beauty, or in this case, designing something completely inappropriate for competitive figure skating.

Taken on its own, it's okay, we guess. A little sloppy-looking, but okay. It might make a decent dancer's costume but the whole fetishy, Justify My Love thing he's got going on here sort of overwhelms the whole garment. It's fine to use your work to make a statement but so far, every statement he's attempted to make has been an empty one.

Tootie!

And speaking of dancer's costumes...

This is, again, a perfectly serviceable design, but it looks like something a 14 year old would wear at a dance recital. All she needs is patent leather tap shoes with bows on them, braces, and a home perm to complete the look.

The bodice is nice and the fabric she used is pretty. If she'd lost the hat and reconsidered the fringe, it would have gone a long way to dispel the stench of rented dance costume.

O TannenBOMB!

Grace, you fabulous bitch.

This really should have been the winner, kittens.

Sure, it was another "Chloe blue," and yes, it's probably not as form-fitting as Sasha would have liked, but it's gorgeous - and it would have looked fantastic in motion.

Although granted, that's a LOT of illusion netting.

Kudos to Chloe for going light on the bling. The sparkles add something, but it's really the garment itself that does all the talking. Beautifully constructed.

Feh. It doesn't look like a Christmas tree. Sasha has no taste. It looks FABULOUS and stylish.

Ice Capades

Warning: We are approaching critical gay mass. Meltdown imminent.

What's scary is, this is what the boys of 35D did when the cameras were on them. God knows what went on when the crew wasn't around.

Quentin Crisp called, Emmett. He wants his shirt back.

It's always fun when they give the designers something crazy to do that doesn't involve dress forms and does involve some bonding time. It makes the backstabbing and bitchery to come all that much more delicious.

It's also always fun to see Tim in jeans.

And Nick, whose gayness up to now was never in doubt, reached heights of queeninity that shocked even us when he saw Sasha for the first time.

She, for her part, seemed a little freaked out by it.

We see Tootie!

Why?

Why do you have to do that with your face? Is speaking that difficult? You have to make a skater's costume. You don't have to defuse a suitcase nuke. Perspective.

We like how Tim respectfully grabs on to Zulema. Everyone's got their hands on everyone's hips, but the Gunn don't roll that way. We're sure that if he fell, he would do it with the utmost respect for everyone else and not accidentally rip off Zulema's costume on the way down to the ice (which is almost certainly what we would do).

Santino: Put your head down and rest for a bit.

You know, it's really saying something when your dress can be accurately compared to a turkey, a baboon's ass, and Carmen Miranda on acid all at the same time. It is at this point that the designer should take a moment to reflect. Perhaps in such cases a change of course is in order.

Especially if your model reacts to the prospect of wearing your dress in front of people with sheer unbridled terror.

Take a moment. Go get yourself a drink of water or something. Put the feathers down.

Honestly, what needs to be said here? This isn't just bad. It's RIDICULOUS. We'll tell you what: if Real-Nina was in that chair, Santino would have been a bloody smear on that runway.

The Duchess nailed it when he said that Santino is too hung up on his concepts and never considers the woman wearing the garment or what the garment is for. Pure concept doesn't amount to much in fashion if it can't be paired with functionality and an aesthetic that people can respond to.

We can begrudgingly agree with Not-Nina that the bodice does have something going for it, with the ruching and the feathers - although there' s far too much of the latter.

No, really. It's not. That's another thing that's so wrong about this. Conceptually, it's fine. You want to do a phoenix theme, go for it. But the colors on this thing were totally wrong.

This doesn't look like fire - at all. And she doesn't look like a phoenix; she looks like a chicken. That was run over.

And come on, Snidely. You knew it was a bad design through the whole process. Stop being so defensive and stop trying to prove some point. You're more talented than this craptacular demonstrates.

We're still pissed.

Lorenzo needed time alone last night to compose himself after we watched this again. This is the bullshittiest of bullshit judgments.

Oh Not-Nina. How we hate you. Bitch needs to get the hell over her sour self and at least attempt to be consistent when she's being a bitch. It was both dowdy AND vulgar? No. That makes no fucking sense. There was "entirely too much tootie" here and yet there were plenty of other tooties roller-skating down that runway that she blithely ignored.

Sour, nasty, no-sense-making ...ugh. Worst judge ever. The girl from the post office did a better job.

It's not that we thought this was a winner or anything but geez, it at least looked like a skater's costume, unlike several other entries that we'll get to later. Too basic and way too sparkly, but honestly, there was no reason for this to be the losing entry. It makes no damn sense.

And yeah, the skirt is way too short but come on, Shannon's easily 8 inches taller than Sasha. You can't design a skating costume for a short girl and have it worn by a tall girl without at least some type of fit issue manifesting itself. Like we said, there were several other tooties waving at us on that runway.

And poor Emmett. Not only was it a bullshit auf'ing, it also wasn't the most dignified way to go, looking as he did like Tony Orlando sans Dawn. God bless him, he still managed to walk off that runway wearing a neon pink pirate blouse, head held high and able to quip his way out. We'd have probably run off screaming and crying.

S2/E7: Congratulations Zulema!

Quickie recap: The designers have to design a figure-skater's costume for world renowned skater Sasha Cohen. You can read Tim's Take here and listen to his podcast here.

We're sorry, but this is pure fugnificence.

Imagine for a moment that this is flawlessly executed (I know, right?). Even without the puckery and ill-fittery, it's just a hopelessly ugly and unflattering design.

We honestly have no idea what the judges or Sasha saw in this thing, although Rachel's ass was probably thrilled with it.

That skirt is HORRIBLE. How is it that this week all the judges ignored that this outfit was just as poorly executed as all the other outfits Zulema sent down the runway? We'll tell you how: there was no Nina this week. Instead, they had that miserable Not-Nina sitting in her chair.

Seriously, it looks like she squirted an entire tube of toothpaste all over her and then stapled a napkin to the bottom of it. That bust is totally unflattering. It makes an under-endowed girl look flat as a board and we suspect it would make any woman with B cup or higher look like a total whore. We also think the belly cutout is pretty unflattering too. With all the contortions a competitive figure-skater puts herself through, we can't imagine all that illusion netting is going to hold up well.

Sasha Cohen must have agreed on some level because she never did wear this monstrosity.
