Sew Not Over: Kit and Rami

Kit:

"For my online collection, I just really wanted to push myself to make things I really would want to wear. It's the ideal of the whole Kit Pistol philosophy that you can mix more nighttime-looking clothes with more casual layering pieces, so it's really about the way that I like to dress."

Well it's certainly very Kit, which is as it should be. Although we wish some of these designers would embrace color a little more. We like the first look but there is something a little weird about the proportions. Don't those "straps" look like they come down awfully low? It's giving her a saggy titty look. We like the buttons on the sleeves but we're not sold on the sleeves ending in little fingerless gloves. LOVE the second look. Third look, interesting but the overall effect isn't that flattering.

Rami:

"The three-look collection is about special pieces representing flattering fits and elegant details which play an essential part in a woman's wardrobe -- delicate embellishments such as pleated and ruffled necklines, sleeves, and hems, as well as decorative quilting that make each piece unique. It's about classic pieces with a modern twist that complement a variety of women with different body types. I desire to bridge the gap between the old and the new, the mythic and the ordinary, story and storyteller. I delight to bring allegory to the arena of fashion."

Good god, that boy likes to talk about his clothes. Not that we can blame him, since this was a VERY strong showing. Nice to see SOMEONE using color and that purple is very hot right now. The first look is absolutely flawless. Beautifully done. We love the second look but that jacket looks a bit overworked to us, which as we've seen this past week can be an issue with Rami. Too many design elements for such a simple silhouette. Third look: Lorenzo likes (except for the collar) and Tom vehemently DISlikes. It's kinda pretty and feminine but - again - a bit too overworked for such a simple little babydoll dress.

Sew Not Over: Steven and Ricky

Steven:
"My life seems to be full of contradictions these days, so I wanted to convey that through the "Sew Not Over" line. I wanted to make cute, fun cocktail dresses that were full of their own contradictions. Instead of bright colors, I used black. And instead of using typical evening fabrics, I used black wool cashmere I bought in Paris over Thanksgiving. I liked the idea of the juxtaposition of these elements with a silhouette that's so familiar -- just reinterpreted in different materials."

Peggy Sue Got Married meets Mad Men. While these are very pretty dresses, they look like period costumes to us, especially the first two. There's no updating or reinterpreting; they're just pretty much exact replicas of dresses our grandmothers wore. The third not so much. Not coincidentally, that one's our favorite.

Ricky:
"My look for the online challenge … it's all kinda sorta built around this lace. I want the girl just to slip in naked and it's perfect."

Well first off, the hats. No. We suspect he thought he was being cute, but...no. The Minnie Mouse gloves don't help. The first and third dresses are okay, but they're right on the border of TackyTown. That second dress isn't on the border; it's standing in the middle of TackyTown Square twirling a baton and setting off fireworks.

Sew Not Over: Jillian and Kevin

Click here to refresh your memory, darlings.

Jillian:
"To break away from the confines of beginning with a concept, for this mini collection, the intention was simple: What do I want to wear tomorrow? Three different outfits to fulfill three different but everyday needs. Clothing should be fun to wear and that was my state of mind when I made these looks. My hope is for people to say, "I would love to wear that." Enjoy!!"

It seems a little silly to say this about three looks, but this little collection doesn't have any cohesion to it at all. None of the looks refer back to either of the others. It's just 3 different looks with nothing in common. Having said that, we love the first one. Flirty and girly and sexy and cute. We kinda hate the middle look. It's boring and basic and it looks a little dated to us. Third look's cute, but that's only because of that ruffly collar or scarf or whatever it is. Without it, this look would be as boring as the second one.

Kevin:
"My collection was inspired by classic European tailoring with a sexy little vixen twist!"

Following the trend, we like the first and third looks but hate the second one. All three of these looks would be better served without the little gloves. Love the dark plaid and the use of leather. In the first look, we love how he used the plaid so that it runs in different directions. Love the little strip of leather along the bustline. Second look? Oh lord. She looks like a Michael Jackson impersonator. Even without the hat and gloves, we wouldn't be crazy about the dress. Third look? Cute. Love the proportions on it. The full shoulders tapering down to the skinny, skinny pants. It's all sexy with a little edge to it.

Sew Not Over: Elisa and Jack

"I evoked and handed over via the wrappings of couture, three characters from a decade's worth of marionettes, puppet, dolls, and other such sculptural beings. These three who exist within the mythic realm of The Hunger World were chosen specifically for Project Runway because of their stories and connotations. "The Mistress of Tenderness" is all in white Ingeo, a completely sustainable fabric spun from corn sugar. She is aflutter with kisses of pure tenderness from her heart and beneath her skirts. "The Healer" is strengthened with a lifeline of a blossoming lotus machine drawn through her body, and her dress is constructed from one seam in organic bamboo. "The Falling Star" is for all to make a wish upon. Her monofilament halter gown is fabricated from a non-sustainable jersey, encrusted with Swarovsky crystals, and has a "fire-licked" hem. She is a fashion embodiment of what I would like to see manifested in the immense power of the fashion industry: conscientious consumerism, green as the new luxury, individualism as the ultimate accessory."

Ooookay.

Well, it's pure Elisa, isn't it? Lorenzo likes the first look but Tom's not with him on that one. It's way too St. Pauli Girl. The only one we both like is the second look, which is unique and striking. Love the color, the hoodie and the flower embellishment. It's hippy-dippy chic, which is what Elisa does best. Lorenzo doesn't like the third look but Tom kindasorta does. It just needed to be fitted better, but the combination of Swarovski crystals and rough edges was interesting.

"I was really drawn to the oversize floral print and that became a source of inspiration for all the looks. The neck of the floral dress is reminiscent of a blossom. I tied in the navy dress with the floral fabric as a trim and the gold-knit dress keeps the same feeling and color palette. I think all three looks are really wearable and work well together."

First things first: we really don't like the styling here. The heavy boots and gloves are all wrong with these basic, girly dresses. Having said that, we don't even like these basic, girly dresses all that much. Maybe that's a bit of an exaggeration. They're just okay as far as we're concerned. Tom likes the print on the first one even if he's not on board with how Jack used it. Lorenzo doesn't like the print at all. We're both agreed that the proportions in the sleeve and collar are a little wonky and it looks poorly fitted in the bust. Second look: we both love the jacket. It would look great paired with...anything but this dress. Seriously, there's (to use a Gunn-ism) an incongruity in these two pieces. The dress looks too large and voluminous under that jacket. Skirt too full and sleeves all bunched up. We both kinda like the third dress but the styling really overwhelms it. Take away the Dr. Zhivago boots and the Miss Piggy gloves and it's a cute dress with some nice detailing. That print from the first dress works better as trim.

Sew Not Over: Christian and Chris

Oh, kittens. You're gonna HATE us in about 2 minutes.

Christian:
"My theme for the online challenge is kinda crazy. My theme is crazy prints and I just wanted to have fun with it and mix prints and do color. They're just funky prints, crazy mix … like a total big abstract painting."

Bitches, we love it. Not the second look so much. That one's too blocky and the proportions are really weird on it. But looks 1 and 3? LOVE. After a full season of blacks and beiges, how nice to see that he not only used prints, but he used beautiful prints and used them well. Not only THAT, but it appears that Princess CAN get away from the "puffy sleeve, bib collar, ruffles" pool he'd been drawing from too much. Oh sure, it's still recognizably Christian, but that's kinda the point. We wish we'd seen looks like this in his Bryant Park collection because unlike them, these demonstrate a more powerful creative ability and stand uniquely as his own work. Nothing derivative here. Pure PPS. We know a lot of you hate this collection but we think it's gorgeous.

Chris:

"My three-piece collection is a trio of sleek, simple, evening dresses, with an emphasis on lush fabrics and column silhouettes. Rouched velvet, matte sequins, and embroidered lace add to the sophisticated, classic looks."

Put bluntly: we thought these were awful. That "lace over a short dress" look has been done to death and this one just looks like lingerie. The second and third looks are so heavy and old-looking. We do like the bottom on Look 2, but the top is bulky and poorly fitted. And speaking of bulky, hello Look 3! She looks like she's got a change of clothes stuffed in her top. She's a tiny little size 0 model and she looks like a linebacker. There's nothing new or even stylish here. They don't look like the work of a fashion designer, they look like the work of a dressmaker.

Sew Not Over: Marion and Carmen

So let's get to it, shall we? If you need a refresher, go here.

Marion:
"My collection is based on imagery. Some of the images like the palm leaf top are graphic and bold, and are paired with a black heavy silk to resonate with the top. Other images like the feather top are delicate and light. The delicate feather print on the top is as delicate as the beautiful feathers on the skirt. The prints are so beautiful that I paired each with a black color palette to keep a cohesive presentation."

Well, well, well. Shut our mouths. This was an interesting little collection of looks. Poor Marion never really did get a chance to shine in the competition and he went out on such a horrendous note that we're pleasantly surprised to see such chic and innovative looks from him. We don't love every part of it. For one thing, not big fans of tulle or large bows and ribbons. On the other hand, this is an interesting collection with a distinct point of view. It's not for the trendy but it is for a particular type of woman. We like.

Carmen:
"It is based on Japanese Female warriors. They are known as Onna Bugeisha. There is also a famous warrior by the name of Tomoe Gozen that was amazing and admired by many. It is my celebration of strong women. I have chosen a Japanese theme using traditional English fabrics. The fur is FAKE -- I DO NOT BELIEVE IN USING REAL FUR. The shapes and hues complement any type of body type and women of all ages."

Warm up your pitching arms and get yourself some ripe fruit, ladies, because we actually liked this collection.

Oh, calm down. We didn't like ALL of it. We kind of hate the flat monochromatic...ness(?) of it. She would have been much better served with some contrasting colors to make that wine/plum pop. That little hint of orange in the 3rd look helps tremendously. We both hate the first look. There's little to recommend there. But that second look? HOT. Those sleeves are gorgeous and the leggings are sexy. Love the belt too. The third look is kinda interesting. We like the idea of a cropped kimono jacket, but we think it probably would have looked better with skinny pants instead of those massive Dorothy Zbornak pants.
