In or Out: Veronica Webb

Brevity is the soul of wit, bitches!

Veronica Webb attends the American Ballet Theatre 2009 Fall Gala at Avery Fisher Hall, Lincoln Center in New York City wearing a gown from Christian Siriano's spring 2010 collection.

Let's start the week off by handing out advice no one asked for, shall we?

So darlings, we were recently perusing Bravo press releases (as we are prone to do), when we stumbled upon this:

"TIM GUNN'S GUIDE TO STYLE (Season 2)

The second season of Bravo's "Tim Gunn's Guide to Style," hosted by Tim Gunn, will premiere later this year. Each episode will chronicle one person's fashion dilemmas and introduce the answer to all their troubles – Gunn himself, with his inimitable style, propensity for coaching and encyclopedic expertise in fashion. With his tutelage, deserving folks in need of some change will get the makeover of a lifetime from the man Entertainment Weekly called "a major arbiter of style." After joining the Bravo line-up in the fourth quarter of 2007, "Tim Gunn's Guide to Style" marked triple digit increases for its Thursday 10 p.m. time period, up 113 percent among adults 18-49 and up 92 percent in total viewers versus fourth quarter of 2006. "Tim Gunn's Guide to Style" is produced by Stone & Company Entertainment, with Scott Stone and Sarah-Jane Cohen serving as executive producers."

Notice anything missing from that? Here, we'll give you a hint:

Can it be, poodles? Is Miss Webb NOT returning to Tim's show?

Darlings, you know us. We just hate to be the judgmental sort, but if this is true, it can only be a good thing for the show. No one was rooting for Tim's show to succeed more than us and for a time, we even thought the casting of Veronica Webb as his sidekick-in-style could only be looked at as a good thing. From the minute the show was announced, we felt that it would need someone on the side to loosen Tim up, play to his strengths and cover any weaknesses he had to get things to run smoothly. A savvy female with a fashion background and a personality would make the perfect foil to counter Tim's fussier, more professorial style.

Unfortunately, Veronica didn't turn out to be the foil we'd hoped for. For one, despite the relative cuteness of the dress in the above pics, her wardrobe on the show was jaw-droppingly AWFUL. First rule of the makeover show, the host(s) need to always look impeccable (See: London, Stacey). Half the outfits Veronica wore made her look like she lost a bet.

Second, we don't know what happened to her, since she'd previously always seemed comfortable and easy to watch on camera, but on Tim's show she came off a little hard and cold and her reactions with Tim seemed a bit forced. No chemistry.

Third, we asked for an interview and she never responded, but that has NOTHING to do with our work here today, kittens.

Bravo, you know you want our advice, so let's not play coy here, shall we? You already have the perfect co-host on hand for Tim.

Here, we'll give you another hint:

We hear she's open to job offers at the moment.

Come on, how perfect would that be? She's got the fashion chops and the on-camera experience, she's popular, she's looking at career options at the moment, and it's a way for the network to hold on to some of that Project Runway fabulosity that they spent so much time and money cultivating. PLUS, she and Tim have history and we think they'd work well together.

Just don't make her go through anyone's underwear drawer. Nina's far too fabulous to be handling someone's discount granny panties.

UPDATE: [Via MiamiHerald.com] "I'm not coming back for Season 2. Tim will be back, though. I'm doing a show for BBC World called Living Style." Thanks Lilithcat/Bia.

Tim Gunn's Guide to Style Episode 4

Blah blah blah...annoying child woman... aged her ten years ... humorless approach to fashion... restrictive sense of style...underwear drawer... we've already said it all.

Besides...

...who could concentrate on the show when Veronica looked like that?

Seriously, what the hell?

Why would anyone take fashion advice from this woman?

And does anyone else get the impression that Tim's pretending not to notice?

Tim Gunn's Guide to Style - Episode 3: Short, Sweet & Opinionated

They made a frumpy (but cute) 29-year old...

... look like a stylish 39-year-old. Somehow, that seems a little counterproductive.

How the hell do you iron a bra, anyway?

"We don't know what the hell we're doing!"

Laura: Fabulous as always.

We couldn't get a shot of the dress she made for her but wasn't it fabulous? Look for it on QVC soon!

"I know honey. They made me do this stupid vest thing. I want to cry too. Wait till you see what I have to wear to the Emmys."

Hot, prissy, man-on-man action.

Veronica, you have no right being a makeover show hostess and looking like that. The hair, makeup and outfit all look like a "before" picture.

Oh for God's sake, will you people LIGHTEN UP?

Jesus Christ, was that a makeover show or a hostage situation? Could this show be any more devoid of lightness and humor of any kind? One word kept repeating itself in our heads last night over and over as we watched this thing: dreary. We've resigned ourselves to the tear-filled endings on these things, but where's the sense of fun? This show feels like a physics lecture. In the immortal words of the Duchess, "Lighten up, it's just fashion!"

Plus, it looks like we really are going to have to sit through this ridiculously complicated "process" every single week. We realize that they have to do something to differentiate themselves from the other makeover shows out there, but we sat there last night yelling "JUST TAKE HER SHOPPING! THIS NECKLINE! THIS HEMLINE! THIS SLEEVE! BOOM! YOU'RE DONE!" at the TV.

Now let's talk panties for a second. While we think it's good that the show is driving home the point that a good wardrobe starts with good foundation garments, we think that whole "going through your underwear drawer" is unnecessarily humiliating for the client and we didn't blame her one bit for her meltdown. We asked a gal pal if she'd let Tim Gunn rifle through her underwear drawer on national television. Her response: "Hell, no! That's where I keep my vibrator! On the other hand, if it means I get a Catharine Malandrino dress, I might." Producers, we beg you, lose this segment. By all means, take her to a "bra specialist" (a job title right up there with "lactation consultant" for sheer ridiculosity), but don't make these poor women hold their granny panties up to the camera.

On another side note: Did every skinny gay Black man in America become a "runway expert?"

Speaking of skinny and gay, it was fun seeing Rene again but we were disappointed there were no ass shots.

Veronica's hair and makeup are still too severe. She looks like a prison matron - and for a makeover show host, her wardrobe ain't all that great, either. She and Tim still have almost no chemistry with each other. She doesn't seem to know what to say half the time and Tim desperately needs someone to loosen him up because the "prissy Professor" persona is not helping things. Bravo posted some outtakes from the show and it's a little distressing because they clearly show a Tim and Veronica that we're not seeing: relaxed, loose, and funny. Why was this stuff edited out? Take a look:

Once again, we have OPINIONS.

The T Lo verdict: Better than we thought it would be; not nearly as good as it could be.

Before we start, we have a very special personal message going out to Veronica Webb. Girl, what the hell is UP with your hair and makeup? You best be handing out the slaps this morning to whomever is responsible. The hair was way too severe and the makeup was Kabuki-level. You are GORGEOUS. It takes some real work to make you look as bad as you did last night. Take a tip from Naomi and beat someone with your cell phone over this.

Now.

Aren't we all just a little relieved that it's not a What Not To Wear ripoff? Oh sure, the basic template is there, but props need to be handed out for configuring the show in such a way as to not immediately make one think of Stacey and Clinton. First off, neither Tim nor Veronica are as bitchy as those two, but more importantly, there seems to have been much more of a concerted effort to make this a more educational experience for the client and the viewer.

Of course, the educational aspect may have been just a bit overdone. Those full-body shots of Tim standing in front of way-too-busy graphics prissily lecturing to us about style do NOT play to his strengths. Tim is wonderful and warm in one-on-one situations and the show needs more of them and less of Professor Gunn. As we said, it's good that the show has an educational tone to it, but a weekly lecture is not going to keep the audience coming back.

Veronica on the other hand...kind of a disappointment. She came across surprisingly stiff and cold on camera. Surprising (to us anyway) because she has quite a bit of on-camera experience and she's always come across as funny, smart and articulate. It felt like she was "over-directed" last night. She and Tim need to find their footing and learn to play off each other better.

As for the format, it could also use a little tweaking. There's an awful lot going on in this process and if we have to watch the same thing week after week (The Optitex, the underwear fitting, the choosing of an icon, the weeding out of the closet, the shopping, the makeover, etc.) it's going to get old real quick. Also, Jared, the "Lifestylist?" Lose him. Now. We were cringing in our seats last night throughout his painful segment. You made a girl with low self esteem parade around in front of a camera wearing a trash bag? Come kneel in front of me so I don't have to get up to slap you.

One thing that we suppose we HAVE to put up with is the producer-enhanced "emotional" stuff. The engagement ring? Bleh. That was just nausea-inducing. Even moreso because she's all weepy and "Oh, honey!" as he's making his little speech to her about how special she is and we're sitting there thinking "Tim Gunn just took that ring out of the closet 5 minutes ago and handed it to you. What are you doing standing there and soaking up all the adoration for something you were told to do?"

Catherine Malandrino? Fabulous. Put her on every week, we say. Lorenzo was practically in tears at the sight of her. Actually, the designer segment is one of the best ideas out of the whole show. We look forward to seeing who else shows up during the season.

All in all, despite our reservations, it's a promising start and we're looking forward to seeing how the show evolves over time.

Tim Gunn's Guide To Style Episode 1 Preview

Bravo's got the previews up for this weeks VERY FIRST episode of Tim Gunn's Guide to Style!

In this one, Tim and the fabulous Veronica Webb are introduced to their first client, a poor girl from a war-torn country where they don't have department stores and only sell poorly fitted jeans and ugly shirts:

Tim shows her his spiffy new, 21st century, state-of-the-art, visualizing software, Optitex (what we in the 20th century used to quaintly call "a mirror") and informs us that she's "disinclined" to wear dresses and needs to "mitigate" her calves (what we in the 20th century used to call "a bitch who dresses badly"):

Tim Gunn's Guide to Style Preview

Darlings, Bravo has a preview of Tim Gunn's new show and there's crying involved!

Can we just say that Veronica Webb is beyond fabulous?

There's been some grumbling in our ear about this show being like every other makeover show out there and from what little we saw here, this one seems to have more of an educational approach to it than most. Oh sure, Stacy and Clinton tend to know what they're talking about, but they're a little more dictatorial than this Dynamic Duo and Tim can't help but lapse into teacher mode, which is a very good thing.

We're really looking forward to this, not just because it looks like fun but because we'll be blogging the show right here on Project: RunGay.

So once again, poodles, Watch What Happens starting September 6th.

BIG news on Tim Gunn's new show, Poodles!

BRAVO TAPS VERONICA WEBB FOR “TIM GUNN’S GUIDE TO STYLE”

Bravo’s New Series, Based On Gunn’s Book, Will Guide The Fashion Challenged As They Make Themselves Over

NEW YORK – May 9, 2007 – Bravo has tapped supermodel, actress, writer, and journalist Veronica Webb as a style counterpart to Tim Gunn in the new series “Tim Gunn’s Guide to Style,” which begins production in New York this week. Using Gunn’s book Tim Gunn: A Guide to Quality Taste and Style (written by Tim Gunn and Kate Moloney publishing in May 2007 by Abrams Image, an imprint of Harry N. Abrams, Inc.) as a manual, he and Webb won’t be making anyone over – with tough-love and guidance, they’ll help people make themselves over. The announcement was made today by Frances Berwick, Executive Vice President, Programming & Production, Bravo.

“We think Veronica will make the perfect complement to Tim – she'll add a little sass to his class,” said Berwick. “She not only brings extensive fashion expertise to the series, but she will be someone for our makeover subjects to lean on, creating a fun, comfortable, yet educational experience that our viewers can learn from.”

In each episode of “Tim Gunn’s Guide to Style,” Gunn will use his unmatched counseling skills, to turn the fashion weary into polished and dapper-looking individuals. Webb will usher style-challenged women on several shopping challenges, while guiding their choices, supporting them and listening to and offering solutions for their concerns. She’ll contribute her opinions, share her fashion knowledge, and support Gunn while he focuses on the big picture of each subject’s transformation. On www.BravoTV.com, userswill be able to further utilize the style knowledge gained from the series, with features such as video style tips from fashion experts and a page where viewers can find and purchase outfits to achieve their desired looks.

As one of the world’s leading supermodels, Webb graced the covers of Vogue, Essence and Elle magazines and appeared on the runway for Victoria's Secret and Chanel. Webb has built upon those accomplishments and achieved remarkable success as a journalist, essayist, author and actress, as well as a prominent supporter for a number of important causes.

Although Webb achieved her fame as the first African-American woman to sign a major cosmetics contract, she has proven that she is more than just a pretty face. Her essay on how to create your own individual style is included in “Individuals: Portraits from the Gap Collection,” an exclusive book published in October 2006 whose proceeds support Product Red and Global Fund initiatives, which help women and children affected by HIV/AIDS in Africa. Webb’s first book, “Veronica Webb Sight: Adventures in the Big City,” contains a series of essays on coming of age in the fashion world and a wide range of other topics.

Webb’s versatility also extends to the acting arena. In spring 2007, she will appear in the feature film “Dirty Laundry,” written and directed by Maurice Jamal. Her other film credits include “Animal Husbandry,” “The Big Tease” and Spike Lee’s “Malcolm X” and “Jungle Fever.” She has also been featured in a recurring role on the television show “Damon” and has appeared in “Just Shoot Me,” “Clueless” and “Enter Laughing.”

Webb made her television debut as a contributing reporter on Fox's “Front Page.” In addition, she has hosted various television programs.

“Tim Gunn's Guide to Style” is produced by Stone and Company. Scott Stone and Sarah-Jane Cohen are executive producers.
