The question on everyone's mind this week was "What does Alex think of the new season?" Well darlings, now's when we all find out. Hit it, Alex!
Okay, is it just us? Easy Sewer here barely spoke a word the entire episode and yet we sat there thinking "He's so cool. Let's go hang out with him and be best friends." Of course, if we were to hang out with him...
Which isn't to say it's a bad dress, just totally wrong for the challenge. When one thinks "red carpet," one doesn't normally think "heavy and funereal."
Don't get us wrong, there are some interesting details here (like the pleat in the skirt and collar treatment and the criss-crossing over the bust), and it's certainly executed well.
But it's a lot of elements for one dress, especially a red carpet dress, and the overall effect is heavy, stiff and overdone. Plus, the length just kills us. Even with the added dingy-looking tulle on the bottom (which is another element to add to the pile), the dress stops at a weird point.
Before we get to the criticisms, we have to say that the zipper was an interesting idea. He just didn't take it far enough. What's the point of incorporating a zipper in the design like that and then zipping it up like it's cold out? Had he unzipped it further and maybe used the open zipper to create some sort of fold or structure to the bust, that could have been interesting. As it is, he added an interesting element and then did everything he could to disguise that it was there at all.
Aside from that, the dress is just boring, and worse,
...it was a wrinkled mess. Perhaps using a steamer isn't considered manly or something.
"No one can really describes the type of garments I do. There's not a vocabulary for them yet."
"Overthought dress."
"Overthought dress with too many elements, poorly executed in the wrong kind of fabric, making it inappropriate for a carpet of any color, let alone a red one." There. We think we've stumbled upon a method of describing your clothes.
"Basically, I'm known in New York as the feather prince."
It's a pretty decent dress. It's not flawless, mind you, but those embellishments on the front are interesting and fairly well done, considering the time constraints.
The only real problem is that it really isn't fitted all that well to the model. If he had pulled off a flawless fit, we think the judges would have definitely taken more notice of it. We also think if he'd gone gown-length it would have served the design well. Although to be fair...
One judge clearly responded well to the short skirt.
"I surprise people a lot. I'm blonde, I'm from the south; people don't think I'm smart and...stuff because...um..."
Kudos to her for trying out that boob treatment, but we can't say we like it. It looks a bit like her bra exploded. And all the rest of that foofaraw makes it look like she's got her dress on inside-out.
The skirt has an interesting drape to it but there's a bit too much skirt there. The proportions look off. And once again, this look could have benefited greatly from some color.
And we hate the way it cups her butt like that.
Sorry, Dr. Whitfield. We applaud your risk-taking but in the end, it's not a very pretty dress.
That harlequin effect she was going for didn't quite come off because there wasn't enough contrast between the two fabrics, but it could have looked pretty cool if there was.
The shoulder treatment was perhaps a bit much, but since the only other bit of visual interest was the contrasting fabrics and they didn't work out so well, it's probably a good thing she went with it. It has a bit of a '40s starlet feel to it.
So, good entry Louise. Now work on your poker face and close your mouth.
Man, they really went for the straight-guy demographic in the casting this year, didn't they? Not that we're suggesting all these hot girls weren't cast for their talent, but there's definitely a "Real World" aesthetic going on since Bunim-Murray took over. Thankfully, they threw us a bone (pun intended, bitches!) by casting a bunch of cute guys too.
It's a pretty color. It says something about the lack of color in all the middle entries that such a pale hue like this stands out for us. Still, it's soft and cool and a little sophisticated. The treatment on the bust could've been nice, but it looks a little half-assed to us. Like some sort of crafts project utilizing tissue paper.
But what really took it out of contention was all the visual puckering going on. Don't use hard-to-use fabrics unless you can pull it off, girls!
On the other hand, the skirt is nice and flows beautifully.
"If you give me a sheep, I can make you a sweater."
We really, really like this dress. It's highly unusual but still pretty and wearable.
Okay, maybe you'd have to keep your arms out at all times to make it work, but it's still really eye-catching and different. We'll take this kind of "different" over Ari's brand any day of the week.
We're really curious how she managed that effect around the top and we're wondering what other tricks she has up her sleeve. Also, we love the fabric. It could have been a contender for the judges' attention if she'd gone with a gown length on this. Something to balance out that treatment at the top would have improved it greatly.
Poor Irina. Such a great rack wasted on a viewership composed almost solely of straight women and gay men.
The bottom of this dress moved incredibly. She did a fantastic job on the skirt, which appears to have some interesting construction to it designed to make it move like that.
And the view from the back is gorgeous.
Despite our stated love of Laura Bennett's designs, we're not normally a fan of lace and we have to say, we're not a fan of the lace she used here. It was very doily-esque. We're also not fans of that sash, which comes off a little twee. And we think that some color would have really helped this look.
"My name is Shirin Askari. It means sweet in Farsi."
Especially since it covers up that really cute detail at the top.
There was also some puckering throughout the garment and it's another one that could have benefited from a color infusion.
But the back of it is really sassy and sexy. What's up with everyone making "walking away" dresses for this challenge? Sure, you see a lot of that on the red carpet, but we're a little surprised that the sexy back was so prominent this week.
