The Good, The Bad, and The Gorgeous

This was pretty cute, actually.

Granted, he used the pants to make pants, the shirt to make a shirt and the jacket to make a jacket, which means for the most part, all he really did was tailor his outfit to fit her, but still, it was cute.

And it looks fit and finished, which is more than you can say for a lot of the entries. But those shoes! What kind of mo are you, picking those shoes for that outfit? For shame, Raymundo.

And this was another disaster from Marla.

The only good thing we can say is that it at least looks like clothing, which is more than you could say about her last entry. That bib-like top is unflattering and ugly and the frilly little trim makes it worse. She looks like she's wearing a napkin for a skirt and a placemat for a top.

And why is she damn near naked? Marla certainly had enough to work with. What's the point of all the exposed skin? She looks outrageously uncomfortable.

Credit where credit's due: this was absolutely gorgeous and could have been the winner easily.

Not a word of criticism will pass our lips. This really is perfect. We don't know what he did to that denim, but somehow he made it look far more expensive than the outfit he started out with.

The layering in the skirt looks chic and stylish...

...and the jacket is perfectly fitted (although we would have preferred it was a little longer in the front). Kudos, Daniel!

There's too many damn designers and we've run out of funny post titles.

Daniel was another designer who wisely chose not to use any denim in the design, although this outfit was in dire need of a splash of color. Walking down the runway, she looked like a film negative.

There's not much to say about this one. Design-wise, it's solid. Simple, but solid. It's also to Daniel's credit that you'd never really know that top used to be a scarf or the skirt used to be a jacket.

Unfortunately, the fit on both is poor. It's pretty bad when your skirt makes your model look like she has an erection.

Ah, so that's where the jeans went. He stuffed them in the ass. Seriously, what the hell? Why does her butt look so huge?

Say what you will about Diana, the girl definitely has a point of view.

It's not that we love the Spider-woman look, but it is striking and it moved beautifully on the runway. Could have done without the little fez-like hat, though.

HATE the bust on this thing. We can't help thinking that this would have worked better with just a little bit of editing. That weird...thing tied to the bust is...well, weird. The thesaurus is in the other room. Sue us.

If she just would have removed a third of all the stringy, tied-together things it would have been a lot prettier. As it is, it's just distracting and she looks like she just escaped from a hostage situation.

Faux, Fierce, and Foxy

It's funny. Faux "dirty" jeans look hot when they're worn normally, but all that ripped, distressed, and stained denim being used for skirts, tops and dresses this week just doesn't work. We can't help but find ourselves hoping these girls were sprayed down with Febreze before they hit the runway.

Even though the end result isn't quite what it could be, we really liked the idea of Emmett using a pair of jeans to make a shrug. Unlike the other designs, we suspect this one was meant to make you think of the original clothes and see how they've been rethought.

Like his entry last week, the basic design is good, it's the proportions that are off. Everything would work better if it was just a little more tailored. Not that there's anything wrong with a looser fit, but without a little more tucking and pinning, it looks too much like he just put an old shirt and pair of jeans on her without really sewing anything.

The only choice that we really don't like is the blue trim, which adds nothing and is a bit too distracting. We don't think the dress needed the trim at all but we do think the belt should have been in a contrasting fabric. A strip of denim would have worked a lot better there.

We can boil Nick's fashion philosophy down to one word: fierce. In fact, we suspect that's Nick's life philosophy.

"How are you doing, Nick?" "Fierce!"

"How's your steak, Nick?" "Fierce!"

"Excuse me, do you have the time?" "It is a FIERCE ten minutes after three, girl!"

This outfit is indeed, the very definition of "fierce." It's not exactly the most tasteful thing and we doubt the word "demure" is even in his vocabulary, but that's fine. He's working an aesthetic and making clothes that are supposed to get your picture taken; not get you marriage proposals.

And that's how this outfit needs to be judged. It's not tasteful because it's not supposed to be tasteful. It's supposed to be hot, outrageous and yes, fierce. Big props to him for coming up with something truly different.

We're not supercrazy about the asymmetry in the top or the (ohmigod I can't believe I'm about to type this) studded thong straps or the -- what is that thing hanging off her ass anyway? A foxtail? However, it is an eye-catching, sexy, over-the-top design and it's perfectly executed, so even though this is not at all to our tastes we think it was a major contender for the top of the pile.

Kittens, is there anything more entertaining...

...than a designer having a total meltdown? Anything at all? We're not sure who came off looking goofier, Andrae or his model.

Oh Jesus, what is she DOING?

Walk, girl. Sashay those hips and look pissed off, like a good model. That's all you're supposed to be doing.

Well, at least someone in the audience found it entertaining.

Ohmigod, no. No she did NOT. Look bitch, walk that dress down the runway, turn around, and walk back. Your little Eartha Kitt impression isn't going to make that dress look any better.

You can see the crazy bubbling to the surface. Commence countdown to meltdown, starting....NOW!

Is there really any need for us to dissect this shitastic disaster?

Oh, you big spaz. It's like he got together with his model beforehand and said "Listen, I have a plan. You act like a total dork and I'll act like a mental patient and we're sure to win this thing."

Has there ever been an instance of a t-shirt so perfectly encapsulating the person wearing it? As entertaining as Andre's crocodile tears were, they weren't half as entertaining as everyone else's reactions - especially our Colombian spitfire.

"What is this? What am I seeing here? Is this raw emotion? Disgusting."

"Oh, boo-hoo-hoo-hoo. I'm so suh-suh-suh-SAD!"

Puhleeze. We're with Tim on this one: Oscar-worthy performance, but we didn't believe it for a second.

"Dear Jesus,

THANK YOU.

Love, Santino."

"Buh-buh-buh-HOOHOOHOOHOOHOO!!!!
DON'T LOOK AT ME! I'M UGLY!!!!"

"Christ. Does Anna Wintour have to put up with this bullshit?"

And then he didn't even have the good graces to stop performing once Kirsten got auf'd. "I ruh-ruh-really LIKE her!"

Even Kirsten's all "Oh, will you shut the fuck up and let me get me goodbye kiss and get the hell out of here?"

Nina: "What an asswipe."
Diane: "Totally."

Newsboys and Hookers

We go back and forth on this one.

On the one hand, it's got a certain charm and funkiness to it and we're impressed how she managed to spin a top out of a scarf and make a hat out of her jacket. She took her very basic starting outfit and she transformed it into something urban and youthful and different. So, kudos for that.

On the other hand, that top looks a little sloppy to us and we tend to think that turning a pair of jeans into a pair of denim bloomers isn't all that innovative or interesting.

Not to mention that the proportions seem off to us. She looks like a shoplifter with a week's worth of groceries shoved down her pants.

Still, it's a unique look and a strong aesthetic statement.

Dear Project Runway Season 4 contestants (whoever you may be),

A bit of advice: the one mistake that consistently gets designers auf'd is the inability to see the problems in their garment and edit them. If you want to make it to Bryant Park, you better start cultivating that ability right now.

Love,
Us

We just don't get this. Presumably she had the model's measurements and should have known very early on that she didn't have enough fabric from the sweater to make an entire dress (although we don't understand why). Even if she didn't have the exact measurements, seeing it on a dress form should have indicated to her that this was suited for a midget hooker and not for any woman over 5 feet.

We can understand not wanting to use the jeans because a quick glance around the workroom would have confirmed that there was going to be a lot of denim sashaying down that runway, but she could have used that metallic belt she wore and made a couple straps, which would have given her more material for the skirt. Editing, darlings. It's absolutely crucial in order to stay in the game.

The back is nice, though.

But aside from that, there just wasn't much that we liked about this outfit.

The weird Frankenstein seams are distracting and the thick trim on the neckline and armholes makes it look like a Star Trek costume.

Another bit of advice: don't stand in front of a bunch of fashion professionals (one of whom is a model) and blame your poor garment on your model's seeming imperfections. It makes you look unprofessional and the judges aren't gonna like it at all.

We will be expanding on these themes in our upcoming book "Cover Your Ass and Cover Your Model's: A Guide to Staying on Project Runway" on sale soon in fine bookstores everywhere! With a Foreword by Wendy Pepper!
