Project Runway at the Emmys

Darlings, PR was well-represented at the 60th Primetime Emmy Awards (even if they didn't win one - boo!). From judges in pretty dresses to pretty dresses made by judges, there is much to discuss, so let's get started, shall we?

Heidi in a very modified version of Armani Privé Fall 2008 collection:

She looks fantastic...

...but those earrings are ridiculous.

Heidi in Valentino Fall 2008 Couture. Normally we'd rag on Jeff Probst for wearing a tux without a tie but the less clothing on him, the better.

Beautiful gown but we're not crazy about dresses that match the wearer's hair color.

Michael Kors Spring 2009 Collection

This would be one of the few pieces from the Duchess' collection that we liked and the color really looks great on her.

Christian Siriano Spring 2009 Collection

We also liked this dress from Princess' collection but we're not sure it's Heidi's style. It's a little too grandiose and "couture" for an awards show.

Modified version of Armani Privé Fall 2008 collection

Of course she looks spectacular but we like the unmodified version better.

A-List Awards - The Fashion Show

Well.

That was kind of a bust, wasn't it? Not that it was completely without entertainment value. Certainly, Kathy Griffin could keep us entertained by reading her insurance policy. And Lorenzo says that the live version was a hell of a lot more entertaining than the broadcast one. For one, Kathy came out and started off by reading a list of the words that Bravo wouldn't let her say and she did it in her inimitable Griffin style. Also, the wardrobe malfunction bit she did with Lance Bass was not ready for prime time but it sure as hell was funny. What you didn't see were her gigantic rubber boobs and his gigantic rubber penis. Since the whole joke hinged on that, it came across pretty flat when they blurred the offending body parts out.

Still, how much fun was it to see an All-Star Project Runway challenge?

It was so weird to see Laura and Mychael back in the work room alongside Nick and Sweet P and Chris and even (god help us) Daniel Franco. Of course we were thrilled because it gave us .... MORE DRESSES TO RIP! YAY!

When there were rumors floating around a couple of months ago that there would be an All-Star PR season, we rolled our eyes and declared the idea lame.

But after last night, we've definitely warmed up to the idea. Come on, who wouldn't want to see Laura's maribou feathers go toe to toe with Chris's human hair skirt? Or Sweet P vs. Alison? Nick v. Christian? Ah well. It's probably for the best.

The dresses from last night are all being auctioned off for relief efforts in Myanmar. How cool is that? You can own a Laura Bennett original AND help out your fellow man.

As for the dresses themselves, well...

Let's just say there were varying levels of fabulosity. You want more? Then continue to Page 2.

Daniel Franco: Once More. With Feeling.

"You see, Heidi, I don't want to just "have sex" with a woman. I want to make love to her. Therefore, I think lingerie should be about making love and not about trashy, dirty, sweaty, marathon sex. Can you see my wispy little chest hairs from there? Should I move in closer? Unbutton another button?"

"No you're fine. You wouldn't believe how well I can see from here."

"Ha. You're sharp, Heidi. I like that. That's sexy, you know. That's real. That's the kind of woman who will want to wear my lingerie. Ha. Not my lingerie, no. I don't own any lingerie. None at all. No, of course I mean the lingerie that I am going to make for you.

I think of you a lot, you know. In the shower."

"Yes. I know."

"I want to make beautiful love-making lingerie with you, Heidi. You see, I believe that a designer can't just tell their client what to wear. You have to feel what they're feeling and then you ask them to feel what you're feeling. That's fashion and it's beautiful, you know? I want to feel you, Heidi. You're my muse. My beautiful, blissful, gigantic Teutonic love goddess. I'm going to design the most sensual, delicious, blissfully respectful line of lingerie ever designed. Nothing vulgar here, no ma'am. You won't see any strap-on dildos built into MY crotchless panties! Nipple clamps? Forget it. Daniel Franco is pure CLASS. Butt plugs? Not here! My lingerie doesn't have any of that stuff. My lingerie is beautiful, respectful and it looks GREAT on me."

"..."

"Shit."

"Tell me you got all that."

"Shit."

Follow Your Bliss, Daniel!

Boy, was THIS a bullshit auf'ing.

Sure, the end product was dowdy and uncreative, but first and foremost, it looked like lingerie, which couldn't be said about ANY of the other entries.

Secondly, also unlike all the other entries, it was well made.

And sure, making such a point forces the question about just which attributes are considered best in this competition. In other words, do you reward someone for good sewing or do you reward someone for innovative design?

Clearly and consistently, the judges come down on the side of innovation and creativity, and for the most part, we've always agreed with that.

But considering the sheer ugliness and poor execution of the other entries and considering the fact that the winner of the challenge had a collection no more creative than this one (and a lot less well-executed), we STILL think this was a bullshit auf'ing.

Couple that with the fact that when it came to picking the loser, the judges had the choice of the lousy team leader with the ugly and poorly executed collection or the good-in-the-final-analysis team leader with the bland, but well-executed collection, Daniel comes out on top in almost any analysis we can apply.

We never put much weight on the commonly cited idea that the judges make decisions to tell certain stories or because the producers told them to. That's not why contestants like Santino get to stay in instances when they clearly should have gone. It's just that people in the fashion industry are always going to get their panties moist when someone puts on the "rebel" costume and mouths off to them. Oh sure, they may not love him in the end (especially if he doesn't have the goods), but in the heat of the moment, their jaded eyes will always fall lovingly on the "outrageous" loudmouth with a "point of view."

Daniel got on our nerves more often than not, but he does have real talent and he did step up in the end and made the most graceful exit the show's ever seen. For that alone he deserves kudos.

TOO DAMN MANY BARBIE DRESSES!

Anyone else think the front of Daniel's dress looked an awful lot like the back of Chloe's last week? We're surprised no one called him on this.

In fact, we're surprised no one called him on a lot of things. The judges pitched such a hissy over Marla's color choices and said not a word about Daniel's. That's kind of a mature, sexy red for a Barbie.

Not to mention, that's kind of a mature, sexy design for one too. We're already finding him so annoying that we're just counting the minutes until his auf'ing. There was no reason in the world for him to be sewing her into the dress at the last minute. The only reason he was in that predicament is because he thinks every stitch he completes is a masterpiece for the ages and requires contemplation and reflection.

Get over yourself, Mary. She looks like a lounge singer.

A reminder: there is actually a female body under all that fabric. In case you'd forgotten.

Here's Santino's approach in one sentence: "Look Mom, I can sew!"

And it's true. The boy really can sew the hell out of something.

The problem is, he can't seem to design something that actually looks good on a woman's body. There's so much detail on this thing and it's so oddly placed that it's all a little overwhelming and it completely obliterates her breasts and her hips.

To be fair, it did look great on the doll and we can see why the judges held it in such high regard because it's so over-the-top frilly that a lot of little girls would love it. If he had won it, we'd have been pissed that Nick didn't, but we would have been able to see what the judges were getting at.

Of course we're thrilled he didn't win it. Not because we're mean-hearted bitches (although we are)...

...but because he just couldn't hide his disappointment at not winning and kittens? That is DELICIOUS.

The Good, The Bad, and The Gorgeous

This was pretty cute, actually.

Granted, he used the pants to make pants, the shirt to make a shirt and the jacket to make a jacket, which means for the most part, all he really did was tailor his outfit to fit her, but still, it was cute.

And it looks fit and finished, which is more than you can say for a lot of the entries. But those shoes! What kind of mo are you, picking those shoes for that outfit? For shame, Raymundo.

And this was another disaster from Marla.

The only good thing we can say is that it at least looks like clothing, which is more than you could say about her last entry. That bib-like top is unflattering and ugly and the frilly little trim makes it worse. She looks like she's wearing a napkin for a skirt and a placemat for a top.

And why is she damn near naked? Marla certainly had enough to work with. What's the point of all the exposed skin? She looks outrageously uncomfortable.

Credit where credit's due: this was absolutely gorgeous and could have been the winner easily.

Not a word of criticism will pass our lips. This really is perfect. We don't know what he did to that denim, but somehow he made it look far more expensive than the outfit he started out with.

The layering in the skirt looks chic and stylish...

...and the jacket is perfectly fitted (although we would have preferred it was a little longer in the front). Kudos, Daniel!
