Barbie Fall 2009 Collection
Y'know, there are those who say that Bryant Park has gotten a little too...shall we say, democratic in the last few years and all too often are renting out tents to groups with only a peripheral presence in the fashion world. We tend to agree. On the other hand, the Barbie fashion show was just plain fun and besides, is there a woman anywhere more fashionable than that little plastic bitch?
"The iconic doll celebrated 50 years with a runway show featuring looks created by 50 American designers, including Michael Kors, Calvin Klein, Anna Sui and Diane von Furstenberg. The world’s top models brought the doll to life in three themed wardrobe sets. The first looks were a tribute to the retro dolls of the '50s and '60s, followed by a Malibu Barbie-inspired crop with big hair and tanned skin, and the finale featured edgier looks with clear plastic toppers that gave the audience a peek into Barbie's bright future."
Some of these looks are just plain adorable and we salute the designers who really got what this show was all about. Some (Malandrino and Burch, we're looking at you) just didn't and threw any old look on a model and called it Barbie.

"Barbie represents a confident and independent woman with an amazing ability to have fun while remaining glamorous," said Diane von Furstenberg.

“Barbie is everything that an All-American gal should be… sporty, smart, sophisticated and sexy,” said Michael Kors.

Trends for Spring '09: Sheer Madness
Darlings, suddenly everyone wants to show off their ladybits! What's THAT all about?
Roberto Cavalli, Vera Wang, Chanel
Don't hate us; we actually like the Cavalli. Oh, don't get us wrong, if we saw someone actually wearing it we'd mutter "dirty whore" under our breath and judge her most harshly, but for the runway, it's fun. Hate Vera's. Love the Chanel.
Cynthia Rowley, Elie Saab, Alexander Wang
Feh/'70s prom dress/skank.
Catherine Malandrino, John Galliano, Armand Basi One
Fab/Runway fab (although those grannie panties...yikes)/Fug.
Costume National, Christian Dior, Monique Lhuillier
Hate the first two and we'd love the Lhuillier except for the white bust. Zellwegger did the same thing for the Golden Globes and we think it looks stupid.
Badgley Mischka, Nina Ricci, Oscar de la Renta
Gorgeous/Fabulously impractical/Fabulous and slightly impractical.
Zac Posen, Betsey Johnson, Calvin Klein
Chic/Outrageously fun/Chic 2, Electric Boogaloo.
Here's the thing when it comes to trends: it's fun to talk about them, but they're fleeting and what is a trend on the runway doesn't always become a trend on the streets. We'll definitely see more sheer in the average stylish bitch's wardrobe in the coming seasons, but have no fear: you won't be seeing a lot of panties and nipples on the subway any time soon. Sorry, straight boys!

What should Michelle Obama wear?
WWD asked several top designers (and Project Runway judges) to sketch Inaugural Ball gowns for Michelle Obama. Some also sketched day looks for her.
"...just about everyone yearns to dress Michelle, who could raise the profile of American fashion around the world. Yet with the exception of Maria Cornejo, her current favorites, as well as a few majors, declined WWD’s request for sketches. Some are loath to presume to offer unsolicited advice, while others, it seems, are definitely in the Inaugural sweepstakes and prefer, or have been asked, to keep their participation low-pro.
But plenty more happily offered their visions for Michelle and her charming first daughters, for the big day and evening events of Jan. 20."
As you may remember, we have expressed some concern regarding Michelle O's fashion choices and several of our readers took us to task for it, shocked and appalled that anyone would have an opinion on what a First Lady wears. Apparently it's disrespectful or something and no one has ever expressed such views about a First Lady before.
If you can handle such appalling disrespect, here's what we think about several of the entries:
Monique Lhuillier - Ball
Very pretty - and the color would look great on her. We're not convinced she's given to such grandiosity, though.
Michael Kors - Ball
Again, the color would look fantastic on her and we think this silhouette looks more like her than the previous one.
Diane von Furstenberg - Ball
Gorgeous.
Diane von Furstenberg - Day
Also gorgeous but perhaps a little too self-consciously Jackie-esque.
Zac Posen - Ball
Zac, were you drunk? Hideous.
Zac Posen - Day
This is pretty, but it seems a little off-concept. Is she meant to wear this to a parade in January?
Badgley Mischka - Ball
Uh...Messrs. Badgley and Mischka? Have you actually seen her body? She's a tall, trim, lovely woman who would look great in various styles but she definitely should not be wearing something that's going to point arrows at her hips and butt.
Besides, this just doesn't look like her at all. Too young and too glam.

On the other hand, we really like this look. It's chic and a little sexy and a little kickass.
Betsey Johnson - Ball
Betsey, doll. Don't ever change.

Project Runway at the Emmys
Darlings, PR was well-represented at the 60th Primetime Emmy Awards (even if they didn't win one - boo!). From judges in pretty dresses to pretty dresses made by judges, there is much to discuss, so let's get started, shall we?
Heidi in a very modified version of Armani Privé Fall 2008 collection:
She looks fantastic...
...but those earrings are ridiculous.
Heidi in Valentino Fall 2008 Couture. Normally we'd rag on Jeff Probst for wearing a tux without a tie but the less clothing on him, the better.
Beautiful gown but we're not crazy about dresses that match the wearer's hair color.
Michael Kors Spring 2009 Collection
This would be one of the few pieces from the Duchess' collection that we liked and the color really looks great on her.
Christian Siriano Spring 2009 Collection
We also liked this dress from Princess' collection but we're not sure it's Heidi's style. It's a little too grandiose and "couture" for an awards show.

Project Runway at the CFDA Awards
Darlings, the world of fashion crowned its homecoming king at the annual fashion prom, the Council of Fashion Designers of America 2008 Fashion Awards. Calvin Klein Collection designer (and S3 PR judge) Francisco Costa took home the Womenswear Designer of the Year award for the second time.
But enough of that foofaraw, let's rip some dresses.
Poodles, we know we've been spending a lot of time Joaning and Melissa-ing all over the red carpet, but we can't help it. It's a great way to check in on all things and people PR-related, a great way to talk about what people are wearing, and a great way for all of us to sharpen our claws for PR seasons to come. Admit it. You've all been bringing your bitchery A game, haven't you? Those poor S5 designers don't have a chance.
Anyway.
Francisco Costa and Eva Mendes wearing Francisco Costa for Calvin Klein
Enh. We think one can find beautiful, understated clothing under the Calvin Klein label, but it doesn't always make for "event" clothing. This is just too understated for the venue.
Victoria Beckham in Marc Jacobs head to toe.
Little hearts pop around our heads every time we look at Posh now. We can't help it. We love her. She dresses like a little girl pretending to be a drag queen. The shoes were designed specially for her. This bitch is gonna be in a wheel chair by the time she's forty.
But she will be IMMORTALLY FABULOUS in the hearts of gay men everywhere.
Zac Posen
We almost get it. It has a nice retro-casual vibe to it, but those Ethel Mertz sleeves are a dealbreaker. Besides, that jacket doesn't look particularly well-fitted.
Still. That boy gives good face.
Lauren Hutton in Francisco Costa for Calvin Klein Spring 2008 Collection
The bitch looks fantastic. That's how you do age-appropriate clothes and still look stylish and beautiful. She's 65, people. She probably could've used some more support for her girls and some serum for that hair, though.
What? We admit we're bitches.
Michael Kors and Hilary Duff in MK
She looks cute. The silhouette's a little grown-up sophisticated, but the color's young and looks great on her.
Paula Patton in Michael Kors Spring 2008 Collection
Not a terrible dress, but she's not really selling it. We don't think it's doing anything for her figure, either.

Fern, Fern, Fern. Sometimes she can look so put together and sometimes she, um...doesn't. Get out your pitchforks if you must, but we're gonna say it. She doesn't always dress appropriately for her body type.

She is SELLING the SHIT outta that dress. THAT is how you stand and pose, bitches. Brava.

Wow, she looks really pulled together. We're a little speechless. It's about as rare as a solar eclipse to not see one or both members of Olsen, Inc. looking just a tiny little bit like they just got out of an institution.

Auntie Mame brings it once again. Say what you will about her clothes, but have you ever not seen her looking radiant and happy in them?

We're not huge fans of these two, but this really is a stunning dress. A lot of people have been taking us to task for being too hard on the ladies walking the red carpet, but this dress allows us to demonstrate why. When one looks at a red carpet dress and says "It's pretty," or "That would look lovely at a) a wedding, b) a garden party, or c) some other event where they don't have paparazzi," then the dress is a big fail in the red carpet sweepstakes.
It's not enough that a dress be pretty. It has to be a dress that the dozens if not hundreds of photographers practically tear each other apart to get a picture of it. It has to be dramatic and photogenic. This dress is a big win.

It's like she has about 8% of real estate on her body that she feels comfortable exposing and she just cuts holes in her clothes to match. Calf-shoulder-side of boob. Check.
Kim Cattrall in Monique Lhuillier Fall 2008 Collection
Absolutely gorgeous. Perfectly styled. Our first thought was "Why didn't she wear this to one of the SATC premieres?" But we think we know why. She doesn't look like Samantha Jones in this. All four of those girls hit the red carpet in character and that was actually pretty clever.
One other thing: she looks her age. And that's actually a compliment. Unlike her SATC premiere appearances, she looks like a beautiful, sexy 50-year-old instead of a 50-year-old struggling mightily to hold on to her youth.
