The Heart Truth Red Dress Collection
Darlings, the fashion week festivities kicked off today with Tim Gunn hosting The National Heart Lung and Blood Institutes Red Dress Fashion Show.
"On February 13, 2009, The Heart Truth will bring the Red Dress to life once again on the runway at New York Fashion Week with the debut of the Red Dress Collection 2009. This spectacular event reminds women of the need to protect their heart health and inspires them to take action. For the first time ever, a selection of the designer dresses seen on the runway will be auctioned online in February through a partnership with Clothes Off Our Back."

More Inaugural Fashion
Well, you bitches wanted more, so let's get to it.
Jill Biden in Reem Acra.
It's a tiny bit showy for her age and her station, but we can't deny that she looks fantastic in it. Not many 57-year-olds can rock a whore-red strapless number.

Oh BeBe. You're making it tough for us. On the one hand, it's nice to see you in something that
a. fits, and
b. is somewhat tasteful.
On the other hand, it's got way too much of a bridesmaid feel to it.

There's a hell of a lot going on with this dress but Demi's skinny as a rail and knows how to wear clothes, so she can pull it off.

We're not in love with the silhouette on the blue one but damn, if she isn't the very picture of a Latin diva wearing it. The white one is nice, but a little bridal.

Horrible.

Slutty-looking and at least a size too small. In other words, quintessential Mimi.
Marisa Tomei attends the Creative Coalition's Inaugural Ball in Giambattista Valli Spring 2009
It's a beautiful dress, but it does look a little costumey and she should have paired it with some jewelry and better shoes.
Rihanna attends the RIAA and Feeding America Inauguration Charity Ball in Jasmine di Millo Fall '07
Feh. It's kind of ugly, frankly.
Shakira attends the Latino inaugural gala, "Celebrando El Cambio - Renewing America's Promise," at Union Station in Oscar de la Renta
Again, if you're a Latin diva and you're attending a Latin ball, THIS is how you do it. Do we love the dress? Not really (especially the fringe), but we have to give her props for picking an unusual color and for wearing something appropriate to the event. Because let's face it, Shakira likes to put those honest hips of hers out there every chance she gets.

Trends for Spring '09: Zip It.
Hey, remember this?
Well good ol' Jeffrey was ahead of the curve on this trend. He didn't invent it and it's not exactly new, but lately, we're seeing more and more exposed zippers on the runway.
From the functional:
Narciso Rodriguez
To the purely decorative (LOVE these):
3.1 Phillip Lim
...It seems like more and more the zipper is becoming the embellishment of the moment. It also seems like every time we show a dress with an exposed zipper, EVERYONE has strong opinions about it. And since this blog is where strong opinions come to roost, we thought we'd weigh in.
Sometimes, it really works for us:
Michael Kors
Like here, where the Duchess integrated them as a practical element to the garment but still utilized them as an embellishment. It works for us probably because it feels somewhat restrained.
On the other hand...
Proenza Schouler
This just doesn't work for us at all. They look like they're wearing their clothes inside-out.
We can't always get excited when it's used as trim:
Versace
The one on the right is fun but the other two bore us.
DKNY, Matthew Williamson, Preen
Same here: boring, boring, boring. In the end, it's like any form of embellishment. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. It depends how you use it.

Project Runway at the Emmys
Darlings, PR was well-represented at the 60th Primetime Emmy Awards (even if they didn't win one - boo!). From judges in pretty dresses to pretty dresses made by judges, there is much to discuss, so let's get started, shall we?
Heidi in a very modified version of Armani Privé Fall 2008 collection:
She looks fantastic...
...but those earrings are ridiculous.
Heidi in Valentino Fall 2008 Couture. Normally we'd rag on Jeff Probst for wearing a tux without a tie but the less clothing on him, the better.
Beautiful gown but we're not crazy about dresses that match the wearer's hair color.
Michael Kors Spring 2009 Collection
This would be one of the few pieces from the Duchess' collection that we liked and the color really looks great on her.
Christian Siriano Spring 2009 Collection
We also liked this dress from Princess' collection but we're not sure it's Heidi's style. It's a little too grandiose and "couture" for an awards show.
Modified version of Armani Privé Fall 2008 collection
Of course she looks spectacular but we like the unmodified version better.
