TFS: Barrel Scrapings
Y'know, we're thinking of planning a day of celebration for that glorious day to come when rompers and formal shorts are once again considered out of style. Who's with us?
Having said that, this wasn't a bad entry on Haven's part, even if it's not to our taste.
We like the little bib effect and we like the colors and the proportions. It's not to our taste, but at least it - wait. What's this?
Now we know why the lighting is so bad on the runway. They don't want to give away the fact that NO ONE ON THIS DAMN SHOW KNOWS HOW TO SEW.
Seriously, Bravo, what the hell? PR always had one or two "I don't know what I'm doing" types every season, but they were usually gone by the third or fourth episode. THIS show is FULL of them.
This was cute and surprisingly well done (at least from afar).
He didn't exactly go out on a limb, design-wise, but maybe he's learning that quiet, competent pieces will keep you in the competition longer.
And at least he didn't simply make a dress that looked exactly like the shoes that inspired it, unlike SOME designers...
We're looking at you, Chicken Diva.
It is a flaw in the judging process on this show that a piece like this got summarily ignored by the judges when in fact, he should have been asked to defend it.
It's not a design tragedy - oh, don't get us wrong, it's got issues, for sure. But the main issue is that he simply made a dress that looked EXACTLY like the shoes. Let's pretend we're judges and ignore that for a moment.
We think the colors on this are just fine, actually. We like the silhouette and we don't even mind the bib.
Sure, it's a bit over-constructed (in fact, it looks like construction paper), but it does add some interest to the front of the dress.
We think where he really went wrong was on those sleeves. They added a further level of complexity to a garment at a point when he should have been looking for ways to keep it simple. That bib is complex enough. If he'd gone with a simple sleeveless shift, it could have been a cute dress.
Except of course, that it looked exactly like the shoes that inspired it. That's not inspirational at all. Bad form, Chicken. Step it up this week.
