The Rest of the Rest

And the retro train keeps rolling along. Funny how each designer seemed to pick a decade. Alexandra: 1930s, Austin: 1950s, Wendy: 1960s and now Vanessa: 1940s.

We'll give her credit for at least updating a 1940s look instead of simply redoing it outright. We don't really like this dress, though. First off, it doesn't look particularly well-executed and secondly that neckline is a bit much. Nothing wrong with a plunging neckline but it's not something you'd see at Banana Republic and besides, all you need is a slight breeze to get her arrested on an indecent exposure charge.

That hemline does look a little interesting, but unfortunately we can't get a good enough look at it to judge either way.

Oy. Did she skin a muppet to get that thing?

This is a walking disaster. It's to his credit that he knew it. There's nothing more painful than an oblivious designer beaming proudly as their latest hot mess comes strolling down the runway.

We almost feel like there's no point in critiquing this since the episode made it clear that this wasn't so much a design as it was whatever was left over on the dress form after he spent too long experimenting. Although this dress was damned right from the starting point just because of his fabric choices. Faux leopard and ice blue charmeuse? Yikes.

We were never really on the Robert-is-a-hottie bandwagon, but y'know? Stress looks good on him. When he's not mugging for the cameras or acting like a doofus, he's downright do-able.

S1/E2: Envy

Quickie recap: The designers are asked to design a dress around the theme "envy" using "the official fabric of Project Runway," cotton. They are then taken to a clothing store where their designs are bid on in a silent auction. You can read Tim's Take on this episode here.

And the winner of this week's challenge is ...

Kara Saun. Congrats, girl!

Kara Saun went with a military-themed dress, reasoning that "envy leads to war."

Now, that's a bit of a stretch, but it was one of the better explanations given by a designer to explain their garment, so we'll let it slide. Except, without the little cap, one wouldn't really assume that this dress had a military theme, let alone an "envy" one.

The trim detailing is nice, as is the handkerchief hem. We won't hold the bleh color against her because they had to hand-dye the cotton in the usual extremely short period of time.

We don't particularly love the dress, but it was inspired and it was extremely well-executed. But we really don't understand that styling at all. If it's military you're going for, what's with the mega-teased hair? Nothing makes us think of soldiers more than hair with a ton of product in it. And hello nipple! This is the second week in a row that Kara Saun sent a couple of nipples down the runway. If nothing else, girl knows how to make an impact.

Candy Girl

Admit it.

You hear the "Ri! Ri! Ri!" Psycho violins every time you look at her, don't you?

There is some major crazy going on under that warpaint because, let's face it, a perfectly stable person wouldn't even think of putting together something like this:

What the...? What is this, "Dance of the Sugarplum Hookers?" We're trying desperately to come up with a way to critique this outfit, but there's nothing there. She looks...uh...delicious? No, no...that's not the word. What are we thinking of? Oh, yes. Ridiculous. She looks frikkin ridiculous.

"Well Nina, my model is from Brazil, so that automatically made me think of candy and prostitutes." Yeah, because people who live in tropical climates just can't stop smearing sugar all over their bodies. Makes perfect sense. IF YOU'RE CRAZY.
