Project Runway Season 7 Final Collections: Amy, Ben, Jesse

Remember, darlings. We're not giving anything away here. At least half of these collections are decoys. Each designer showed 10 looks.

Congratulations!

Put your red dress on, girl!

Okay, kittens. We're all feeling the S7 love and everything, but if we see one more challenge with the words "signature dress," we're going to scream.

And while we're always happy to see a quote, unquote, "real woman" challenge (because we're guaranteed a fight and the extra comments that come with it), this one seemed, well, a little flat. Call us cold-hearted bitches if you want, we won't argue, but we don't watch Project Runway for inspiring stories about real life women overcoming adversity. We watch it for dresses and backstabbing.

We're sure these are all lovely women and we're impressed by their strength, their ability to make fashion designers cry, and their willingness to wear unflattering dresses in front of millions of bitchy people like us, but...well... we were kind of bored with them. Not one demanding, attention-seeking client in the bunch. People who live with life-threatening or -altering illnesses tend to make shitty reality show participants because they're all "deep" and "centered" and shit. They better make up for it by having pageant moms on next week.

Using the logo SHOULD have been the most interesting and challenging part of the challenge and we were all set for some Hershey's challenge-style creative use of iconic graphic elements, but frankly, it looks like with Ping gone, everyone took a boring pill and decided to play it safe.

Bunim/Murray: This is EXACTLY what happens when you give them too many "make a pretty dress" challenges in a row. All the creative drive gets sucked right out of them. Make a note.

Anyway, congrats to Amy. We thought it was obvious even when she made the soap dish dress that the girl was going to catch the judges' collective eye at some point.

And while we don't want to take too much away from her win, we think she got the win in a week when the offerings from her competitors were pretty damn thin.

It's just an all right dress, frankly. It moves beautifully, but that's about it.

And yeah, okay, it was of some slight interest that she frayed the edges like that.

But we don't think that bust is flattering at all and we don't understand why the judges got moist over that mostly hidden sash with the logo on it. We like Amy a bit more each week and we definitely think she's got something worth watching, but this wasn't the dress to fire up our imagination. Then again, right from the beginning it didn't seem like a challenge that was going to reward innovation, which is why most of the dresses were safe entries and why the safest entry of all won.

Jesus & Amy

Let's bang this one out while we're getting the RuPaul screencaps, kittens.

We never could have predicted that these two would work well together. Not that either of them are problematic from a personality point of view, just that their styles seem so different. And yet, they were really cute together. If we were skinny little 21-year-old queens, we'd think Amy was the most fabulous and glamorous fruitfly we could wish for. We're telling you: it's that Streisand eye makeup. It just kills us.

Model: Holly Ridings

And it has to be said, they managed to put together a pretty fabulous look.

We love that they essentially created their own fabric from dozens of little pieces stitched together. Frankenfabric. It's a unique look and - we know we're not supposed to say this - it looked expensive.

And we REALLY loved that shrug/vest/ruffled tire thing.

Although we didn't quite love the way it came together in the back.

Still, we thought it was a really well done look with some innovation added. We honestly can't tell who was more responsible this design. From what little we know of the two of them at this point, it doesn't really look like either one of them. We suspect that's because, unlike a lot of the other teams, this was a true collaboration. Sharp-eyed minions point out that Amy wore a shrug like that to her audition. And since the gown kind of fits Jesus' over-the-top aesthetic, we guess this really was a true collaboration.

Models: Brandise Danesewich/Sophia Lee

And while we know how much most of you minions hate harem pants, we have to say that this was a truly ingenious way of reinterpreting Ping & Jesse's lace toga.

Also, we need to note that we were kind of sorry to see Sophia sent home. She's a bitch and a pain in the ass and we understand why no one wanted to work with her but she had a hell of a walk.

Anyway, this look. The reason we admire it is because the harem pants actually mimic the line of Ping's over-the-shoulder skirt pretty effectively.

And the tank top with just the hint of lace showing was a nice down-market way of interpreting the look. We don't LOVE this outfit from a style perspective, but we applaud it from a design perspective. In the immortal words of La Nina, they "really thought about it."

Girlz Rool!

Ladies to the dance floor, please!

We're liking her. She's low-key without being boring (yet) and she seems creative, even if last week's effort was an insult to breasts everywhere. She certainly made up for it this week.

And we are totally digging the '68 model Streisand eye makeup, by the way.

Model: Alison Gingerich

Not just super-cute, but really creative and thought out. In fact, shouldabin the winner.

The masterful dye and construction job on the skirt is the first thing you notice of course, but we really think that top is what makes the look.

It drapes beautifully and rather than disguise the burlap, it draws attention to it by saying "Hey, look how soft and drapey I made this potato sack look." We also really like the bands on the edges and the waist, which gave it structure.

To have such a beautifully constructed top AND a beautifully dyed skirt is what made this, to our way of thinking, the clear winner. We don't know what the judges were thinking on that front. It seemed obvious to us.

About the only criticism we can make is that the skirt is a bit too much of a tutu.

Still, after last week's boobtrocity, she came back strong and is making us think she's one to watch.

And speaking of one to watch, don't turn your back on Mila, darlings, she's a bit crazy.

Honestly, we don't know WHAT the hell happened there, but she went from the calm, cool, collected pro we assumed she was into a moody little sophomore in the blink of an eye. And for what? Because some model she barely knows didn't pick her for the dodgeball team? Honey, get a grip. Focus on your competitors. Who gives a shit what some model thinks?

Model: Lorena Angjeli

Despite the high school drama of it all, she pulled together a knockout look.

This is exactly the kind of thing a model would wear to an "industry party;" short, tight, and at least a little bit of shiny.

The only thing is...
What the hell's going on there? Strange, because the rest of the dress is impeccably made.

And the detailing is gorgeous.

The only real issue is the slightly strange fit on this thing; loose and tight in weird places.

Still, she's also one to watch. Especially if there are sharp objects in the room. She can get a little testy.

The Other Good-Enoughs

So many, poodles. SO MANY!!!

Jonathan sez: "I'm trying to discover the place where gritty meets pretty."

T Lo (after Jonathan says this two more times) sez: "Is this gonna be a thing with you?"

We can't be mad at him, though. Because if we were contestants on Project Runway, "So what are you guys going to wear to the judging tomorrow?" would be EXACTLY the question we'd go around asking.

Model: Brandise Danesewich

Okay, we get it now. That whole gritty/pretty thing.

The bodice is really cute and kind of interesting. It would have to be because except for that and the belt, there's not a lot of visual interest going on in the front.

He tried in the back but the execution failed him.

But there's enough going on there to leave us intrigued. A decent first entry.

Amy sez: "I like being different."

Model: Valeria Leonova

T Lo sez: "Honey, there's 'different,' and then there's putting a soap dish on your tit."

It's a shame, because we really like the skirt, but that light fixture on her boob is driving us to distraction. WHY?

Cute from the back, even if the skirt's a little diaper-y.

She almost had something really cute and stylish, but she ruined it with that boobtrocity. She needs editing skills.

Ben sez:"I like to see someone evolve into another personality when they put something on of mine."

Model: Sophia Lee

T Lo sez: "Yeah, we used to wish we were Wonder Woman too."

We get it, where he's coming from. That whole space queen/superhero thing. It's kind of interesting how they cast designers with some fairly rigid design aesthetics. It just occured to us because we're about to utter a criticism that we just realized we've said more than once already.

Namely, that if he's going to keep pulling out these comic book looks week after week, the judges are likely to get bored with it quickly.

He's also going to need to ramp it up in the technical department. That back looks a right mess. Interesting seam placements, but the shininess of the fabric and the puckery of the seams doesn't help with the statement.

Still, another interesting first entry. We'll see how well his genre-inspired aesthetic will work when he has to make a dress out of kitchen utensils.
