Emilio & Anna

Last but not...well actually, yeah. Kinda.

"We could've been more innovative but I'm working with someone who has very little experience so I had to scale down just to make sure we had a gown on the runway."

These two didn't make a very good team. They were pretty much drama-free, but that doesn't mean they were bringing the best out of each other. She's too much in her own head and he doesn't seem to have much patience for her inexperience. Result?

Model: Cerri McQuillan
Mediocre.

Once again, the crass question that we need to ask: Do you see 500 bucks here?

And where is the technical skill we've come to expect from Emilio?

And where's the sense of fun he brought to both of his previous garments?

It's basic and dour and not particularly well made.

Model: Valeria Leonova/Alison Gingerich

And while this is at least a much cuter dress, it wasn't without its problems. For one, what the hell does this have to do with Maya and Jay's dress? It shares not one similar design element except for color.

And it too, is pretty damn basic.

Cute, absolutely, and well made. But basic.

And we're not crazy about the sheer skirt.

And that's about all we have to say about that.

Maya & Jay

In the version of Project Runway that plays in our heads, these were the winning looks.

Those editors struggled mightily to wring some drama out of it but except for a couple sound bites, nothing much came of it.

Sure, it's possible he slacked off because he had immunity and that's not cool, but they managed to pull together to highly technical garments and we doubt she did all the work on her own.

Model: Valeria Leonova

See, if you're going to take the designers to a museum, show them a bunch of couture gowns, and ask them to make a signature look, this should have been exactly what the judges were looking for.

And to be fair, they did praise this to the heavens, but then they inexplicably praised Mila for making separates and handed the win to her. Oh, cracky judges. Don't ever change on us.

Anyway, this was an unusual and strikingly beautiful look that was styled to perfection, which in itself is unusual because the styling this season has been pretty bad so far.

And Valeria walked the hell out of it.

Now, those noodles weren't executed as well as they could have been and maybe this is where we and the judges parted ways. We would have given the slight technical problems a pass and awarded the win based on the design alone, but it's possible that the judges weren't thinking along those lines.

We agreed with Nina when she commented on how sexy that low, low cut on the side is.

Model: Brittany Oldehoff/Kasey Ashcroft

If we were members of the Geek Squad we would have been pissed, because the knockoff blows the 500 dollar version right out of the water.

Fifty bucks. Just keep reminding yourself of that. They did some amazing detail work here. Absolutely love the horizontal pleats in the front and the curved hem on the top. One thing we don't like (and it's nitpicky, we admit) is that big ol' button on the vest. It just looks a little "craft project" to us.

And the other minor criticism is that they really didn't reinterpret the original look that much. It's the same color, style, length, and silhouette as the original, just done better.

Of course, that might have been deliberate on their parts, but it might have been a factor in the judging. Still, they're our winners of the week.

Seth, Maya, Boo Boo Kitty

Keep it moving, people.

We still think Seth's high up on the ones to watch list...

Model: Kristina Sajko

But this dress was not without its problems, even though we liked it.

Correction: we like parts of it. That's the thing we noticed this week. With this dress and the one he did last week (which we loved), we can see there's a tendency to put a LOT of elements on one garment. Sometimes they work together and sometimes they don't.

The one thing we really love about this piece is the hood, especially the way it attached to the bodice.

We could have done without the grommets, though.

And we could have done without those weird buckle-y things on the back.

Oh, and he kinda went overboard on the piping.

And really, the silhouette's a bit much. Despite all that, it's a pretty eye-catching look. For us, it's all about that hood. Had he married that to a slightly more toned down garment, it couldabin a contender.

We'll be honest. Maya frightens us a little. It's the hair and the eyebrows and all the...intensity, y'know? She looks like a femme fatale in a film noir. You couple that with ready access to sharp instruments, a high-stress situation, and her tendency to be really, really quiet and it leaves us waiting for a middle-of-the-night scene with an overturned lamp and her standing there with a smoking gun in her gloved hand while Tim bursts into the room in a fedora and says "My god, Maya. What have you done, you cold-hearted minx?!"

Okay, maybe that's just us. On the other hand...

Model: Monique Darton

My god, Maya. What have you done?

To her credit, she seemed to recognize that she had a little bit of ass walking down that runway.

She seems better than this and if we had to guess, we'd say she got too caught up in the various techniques she was using and didn't step back to look at the whole effect until it was too late.

We'll give her credit for her color choices, but the overall effect makes her look a little like a pinata.

Boo Boo Kitty, you have set the new world record and now we expect you to cry several times each episode. You have let us down. Please treat us to more talking-while-weeping funny faces in the coming episodes.

Model: Valeria Leonova

Because when you don't cry, you make dresses that basically look like crying jags in dress form. Seriously, that dress is depressing.

And we don't mean to single her out because so many other designers are doing them, but we're almost ready to declare a moratorium on sweetheart necklines for the rest of the season. Enough, people. Show us your nuts and make a frigging sleeve every now and then.

This is a design that might have worked in a fabric other than burlap and in colors other than these, but even then we're not sure. The skirt's a little too poofy in the wrong places.

And let's face it, that bustier is too small and too sad looking. And the way she trimmed it makes it look a little Wonder Woman.

The Other Good-Enoughs

So many, poodles. SO MANY!!!

Jonathan sez: "I'm trying to discover the place where gritty meets pretty."

T Lo (after Jonathan says this two more times) sez: "Is this gonna be a thing with you?"

We can't be mad at him, though. Because if we were contestants on Project Runway, "So what are you guys going to wear to the judging tomorrow?" would be EXACTLY the question we'd go around asking.

Model: Brandise Danesewich

Okay, we get it now. That whole gritty/pretty thing.

The bodice is really cute and kind of interesting. It would have to be because except for that and the belt, there's not a lot of visual interest going on in the front.

He tried in the back but the execution failed him.

But there's enough going on there to leave us intrigued. A decent first entry.

Amy sez: "I like being different."

Model: Valeria Leonova

T Lo sez: "Honey, there's 'different,' and then there's putting a soap dish on your tit."

It's a shame, because we really like the skirt, but that light fixture on her boob is driving us to distraction. WHY?

Cute from the back, even if the skirt's a little diaper-y.

She almost had something really cute and stylish, but she ruined it with that boobtrocity. She needs editing skills.

Ben sez:"I like to see someone evolve into another personality when they put something on of mine."

Model: Sophia Lee

T Lo sez: "Yeah, we used to wish we were Wonder Woman too."

We get it, where he's coming from. That whole space queen/superhero thing. It's kind of interesting how they cast designers with some fairly rigid design aesthetics. It just occured to us because we're about to utter a criticism that we just realized we've said more than once already.

Namely, that if he's going to keep pulling out these comic book looks week after week, the judges are likely to get bored with it quickly.

He's also going to need to ramp it up in the technical department. That back looks a right mess. Interesting seam placements, but the shininess of the fabric and the puckery of the seams doesn't help with the statement.

Still, another interesting first entry. We'll see how well his genre-inspired aesthetic will work when he has to make a dress out of kitchen utensils.
