Congratulations!
The challenge? Well, it was another "make a pretty dress" challenge unfortunately. But NEW TWIST ADDED. This time, they have to make a pretty dress AND an ugly dress! Or something. It got confusing.
Yes! "Create a high end signature look" but ALSO, create a low end, piece of shit look! Never before in the history of Project Runway blahblahblah!Honestly, the challenge didn't bother us. It was one of the weirdest twists they've ever sprung on the designers, but hey, anything that causes those little fame whores some stress is entertainment gold as far as we're concerned. We hope they set their work tables on fire next week.
And besides we got all this weirdly sociopathic "Is she gonna backstab me? I'm gonna backstab her" drama from Jonathan, which unfortunately amounted to nothing because why would you throw your team leader under the bus if it looks like the judges like the work?
Still. We've got our eye on you, missy. You were so ready to go straight to fucking over your team mate that we think we might love you a little.
And what made it so delicious is that she was completely unaware. Had he actually gone through with it, she would have been shocked. But enough almost-drama.
The outcry was long and loud in T Lounge last night over this win. We have to say, we probably wouldn't have given the win to this look, but we're okay with it, for the most part.
It's unique and boldy graphic and editorial and that goes a long way with those judges. Remember, we were all sick of the "I would totally wear that" judging of last season. Well, this is what you get when you have Nina on the judging panel: things that will look great photographed in a magazine.
Plus, they loved that she didn't do a dress and frankly, so did we. Any time someone executes a garment well on this show and that garment is not a dress deserves at least some props.
And it wasn't just executed well, it was executed flawlessly.
Two things we wish they hadn't done: the racing stripe on the pants, which made the whole thing look like a high end workout suit, and the sparkly black top, because a pop of mod color would have gone a long way here.As for the bizarre, "make a shitty version of someone else's dress" part of the challenge...
In fact, this would be the one reason to question their win, as far as we're concerned. The judges clearly didn't like this look, so how is it they won, when the other top team sent out two looks that the judges loved? Mysterious.
It's such a literal, unimaginative reinterpretation, right down to the sad little "feather."
It's a cute silhouette, but we loved hearing the judges bitch about it being a babydoll dress, since for a couple of seasons there, the PR runway was where babydoll dresses go to die.
That belt is sad.
We kind of wonder what was going on in Mila's living room last night when it was revealed that her team mate was ready to shiv her in the cafeteria. We suspect a lot of "Oh, you know I love you/I was tired/it was the editing/I didn't really mean it" texting was flying back and forth. But Jonathan, you better run, because Mila scares us a little.Tim Gunn's Workroom:

Seth, Maya, Boo Boo Kitty
We still think Seth's high up on the ones to watch list...But this dress was not without its problems, even though we liked it.
Correction: we like parts of it. That's the thing we noticed this week. With this dress and the one he did last week (which we loved), we can see there's a tendency to put a LOT of elements on one garment. Sometimes they work together and sometimes they don't.
The one thing we really love about this piece is the hood, especially the way it attached to the bodice.
We could have done without the grommets, though. And we could have done without those weird buckle-y things on the back.
Oh, and he kinda went overboard on the piping.
And really, the silhouette's a bit much. Despite all that, it's a pretty eye-catching look. For us, it's all about that hood. Had he married that to a slightly more toned down garment, it couldabin a contender.
We'll be honest. Maya frightens us a little. It's the hair and the eyebrows and all the...intensity, y'know? She looks like a femme fatale in a film noir. You couple that with ready access to sharp instruments, a high-stress situation, and her tendency to be really, really quiet and it leaves us waiting for a middle-of-the-night scene with an overturned lamp and her standing there with a smoking gun in her gloved hand while Tim bursts into the room in a fedora and says "My god, Maya. What have you done, you cold-hearted minx?!"Okay, maybe that's just us. On the other hand...
My god, Maya. What have you done?
To her credit, she seemed to recognize that she had a little bit of ass walking down that runway.
She seems better than this and if we had to guess, we'd say she got too caught up in the various techniques she was using and didn't step back to look at the whole effect until it was too late.
We'll give her credit for her color choices, but the overall effect makes her look a little like a pinata.
Boo Boo Kitty, you have set the new world record and now we expect you to cry several times each episode. You have let us down. Please treat us to more talking-while-weeping funny faces in the coming episodes.Because when you don't cry, you make dresses that basically look like crying jags in dress form. Seriously, that dress is depressing.
And we don't mean to single her out because so many other designers are doing them, but we're almost ready to declare a moratorium on sweetheart necklines for the rest of the season. Enough, people. Show us your nuts and make a frigging sleeve every now and then.
This is a design that might have worked in a fabric other than burlap and in colors other than these, but even then we're not sure. The skirt's a little too poofy in the wrong places.
And let's face it, that bustier is too small and too sad looking. And the way she trimmed it makes it look a little Wonder Woman.Tim Gunn's Workroom:

Last But Not Least
"I would say that I sort of define myself as an artist and I'm working in the direction of fashion design."Feh. Too much was made of this fairly innocuous (coming from a recent college grad) remark, we say. Hello? She's like a fetus. Give her some breathing room. You said shit like that when you were fetal too.
And uhhh....thus ends the "defending her" portion of our program.
Hey, we're all for simple. But here's the thing about that: if you're going to go very simple in form, then, a) It should be a tasteful and interesting material,
and b) It needs to be FLAWLESS.
She kinda failed on all counts.
It's a dull dress and a poor choice of fabric for it. Somehow she managed to make glitter look depressing.
"The most famous pirate you can probably think of," Jesse?Captain Hook? That guy on the rum bottle? Help us out here.
And while you're at it, help us out here. Because man, we just don't get it.
She's like a business woman, then? With the pencil skirt and the plaid and all that? But her shoulders get really hot? Is that it?
And she slept in this outfit last night? Is that the story? Or wait, she put on everything upside down for some reason? We're confused.
All joking aside, we really didn't get this look at all and we REALLY didn't get it when he went on and on about his tailoring skills being evident in the piece. Credit where it's due: he did make three pieces and lined one of them. It doesn't excuse the bizarre fit and incomprehensible concept behind the outfit, but points for ambition.
"I like fashion that takes risks."Okay, fair enough.
We'd argue that slapping a big ruffly fungus on a dress ain't exactly unheard of in the fashion world, though.
Like so many of this year's crop of designers, she's gonna have to figure out how to self-edit on the fly. We like the basic concept of the dress and we like the way she used the colors, but that piece is simply way too big. One third the size and she'd have an almost perfect look.
But there's a second problem here besides lack of editing. This dress fits her terribly. Tight around the ass and weirdly loose in the front. That looks like a technical issue rather than a design issue. The basic dress is as simple as it gets. She should have been able to pull off a better fit than that.Tim Gunn's Workroom:
