And the Big Question of the Day...(Spoilerish)

Whatever happened to Baby Maya?

When we first entered the tent and were milling around meeting up with various designers (Jesus came running right up to us and for a second, we were a little afraid he was going to throw a drink in our faces and slap us viciously, but he could NOT have been more adorable), one of the designers we stopped for a quick picture was Maya. After she graciously posed for us and walked away, a lightbulb went off over our heads. "Waitaminnit, what is she doing out here?" You see, all the finalists and decoys are backstage at that point. You NEVER see them out front until they come out to introduce their collections. You rarely even see them after the show is over as they usually have press or filming to do backstage. We didn't think of it again until people were tweeting back or responding to our tweet post asking where her collection was.

Tim said that any designers left after last night's elimination would be showing at Bryant Park, so what happened there? We can't even speculate. That's why we have you. So...speculate away.

Emilio, Jesse, Maya

Poodles, it's a veritable PARADE of frumpy, twisty, unflattering fashion!

"Prior to this challenge, it was all about me, me, me, me, me. But after meeting the ladies, you realize that there are greater things in this world than just winning a challenge."

Oh, PUH-LEEZE, bitch. If we were in charge of this show, we'd make sure to replay that soundbite every time Emilio trash-talks his competitors or acts like he shits ice cream. They had several opportunities to do so in this very episode as Emilio, post-Afterschool Special moment, did some trash-talking about the other garments.

When really, he should have been paying a lot more attention to his own.

We checked. As far as we know, she wasn't pregnant.

Now, she looks to have a perfectly fine body. We're not saying she's fat or there's anything wrong with how she looks physically. But she clearly does not have the body to wear a dress like this. Again, no crime in that, but the whole point to these "real women" challenges is to get the designers to design something for a body that doesn't have the measurements of a wire hanger.

Additionally, for some reason his technical skills went off the rails this week.

Inexplicably sloppy.

His previous two dresses demonstrated a high level of technical proficiency so what exactly went wrong here, with a design that looks to us to be a hell of a lot simpler than his previous work?

Honestly, we sometimes think we're watching Bizarro Project Runway when we hear the judges talk about Jesse's work.

Nina praised this. Stop and reflect on that for a moment.

NINA. PRAISED. THIS.

Seriously, what was she thinking? She'd have raked another designer over the coals for this in previous seasons. We hope she's not toning herself down to avoid the "bitch" label. Nina! Embrace the bitch label! In this world, it means you're smart and have high standards!

So, okay. There's the incredibly frumptastic white jacket with the "Teacher of the Year" craft project corsage...

And then there's this. Or rather, these.

In fact, this neckline was what got Nina to wax rhapsodically. Although she was forced to admit that it wasn't the right neckline for this poor girl. Well Nina, we don't want to tell you how to do one of your jobs, but ISN'T THAT THE WHOLE POINT? To design for THESE girls?

Come ON. She looks like slutty Ethel Mertz!

And when we say "these girls," we mean the ladies, not the tits. Granted, designing for her tits would have been a step in the right direction, but still. We wanted to clear that up.

It was mostly inoffensive from the back. Still frumpy and definitely not flattering, but okay.

We like Maya. We think she's cool and intense and she's got an interesting aesthetic...

But this was another instance where the judges overpraised the piece. She looks like she's standing in front of a really large fan.

And while we realize that there is gold in the Campbell's logo, that gold and red together in one dress is a bit much from a color perspective. Hints of gold would work; a gigantic window treatment from Graceland hanging off her hip doesn't. Also, the way it curls around her boob doesn't look very flattering to us.

Again, not too bad from the back. Maybe they should have just had all the models walk backwards down the runway.

Maya & Jay

In the version of Project Runway that plays in our heads, these were the winning looks.

Those editors struggled mightily to wring some drama out of it but except for a couple sound bites, nothing much came of it.

Sure, it's possible he slacked off because he had immunity and that's not cool, but they managed to pull together to highly technical garments and we doubt she did all the work on her own.

Model: Valeria Leonova

See, if you're going to take the designers to a museum, show them a bunch of couture gowns, and ask them to make a signature look, this should have been exactly what the judges were looking for.

And to be fair, they did praise this to the heavens, but then they inexplicably praised Mila for making separates and handed the win to her. Oh, cracky judges. Don't ever change on us.

Anyway, this was an unusual and strikingly beautiful look that was styled to perfection, which in itself is unusual because the styling this season has been pretty bad so far.

And Valeria walked the hell out of it.

Now, those noodles weren't executed as well as they could have been and maybe this is where we and the judges parted ways. We would have given the slight technical problems a pass and awarded the win based on the design alone, but it's possible that the judges weren't thinking along those lines.

We agreed with Nina when she commented on how sexy that low, low cut on the side is.

Model: Brittany Oldehoff/Kasey Ashcroft

If we were members of the Geek Squad we would have been pissed, because the knockoff blows the 500 dollar version right out of the water.

Fifty bucks. Just keep reminding yourself of that. They did some amazing detail work here. Absolutely love the horizontal pleats in the front and the curved hem on the top. One thing we don't like (and it's nitpicky, we admit) is that big ol' button on the vest. It just looks a little "craft project" to us.

And the other minor criticism is that they really didn't reinterpret the original look that much. It's the same color, style, length, and silhouette as the original, just done better.

Of course, that might have been deliberate on their parts, but it might have been a factor in the judging. Still, they're our winners of the week.

Seth, Maya, Boo Boo Kitty

Keep it moving, people.

We still think Seth's high up on the ones to watch list...

Model: Kristina Sajko

But this dress was not without its problems, even though we liked it.

Correction: we like parts of it. That's the thing we noticed this week. With this dress and the one he did last week (which we loved), we can see there's a tendency to put a LOT of elements on one garment. Sometimes they work together and sometimes they don't.

The one thing we really love about this piece is the hood, especially the way it attached to the bodice.

We could have done without the grommets, though.

And we could have done without those weird buckle-y things on the back.

Oh, and he kinda went overboard on the piping.

And really, the silhouette's a bit much. Despite all that, it's a pretty eye-catching look. For us, it's all about that hood. Had he married that to a slightly more toned down garment, it couldabin a contender.

We'll be honest. Maya frightens us a little. It's the hair and the eyebrows and all the...intensity, y'know? She looks like a femme fatale in a film noir. You couple that with ready access to sharp instruments, a high-stress situation, and her tendency to be really, really quiet and it leaves us waiting for a middle-of-the-night scene with an overturned lamp and her standing there with a smoking gun in her gloved hand while Tim bursts into the room in a fedora and says "My god, Maya. What have you done, you cold-hearted minx?!"

Okay, maybe that's just us. On the other hand...

Model: Monique Darton

My god, Maya. What have you done?

To her credit, she seemed to recognize that she had a little bit of ass walking down that runway.

She seems better than this and if we had to guess, we'd say she got too caught up in the various techniques she was using and didn't step back to look at the whole effect until it was too late.

We'll give her credit for her color choices, but the overall effect makes her look a little like a pinata.

Boo Boo Kitty, you have set the new world record and now we expect you to cry several times each episode. You have let us down. Please treat us to more talking-while-weeping funny faces in the coming episodes.

Model: Valeria Leonova

Because when you don't cry, you make dresses that basically look like crying jags in dress form. Seriously, that dress is depressing.

And we don't mean to single her out because so many other designers are doing them, but we're almost ready to declare a moratorium on sweetheart necklines for the rest of the season. Enough, people. Show us your nuts and make a frigging sleeve every now and then.

This is a design that might have worked in a fabric other than burlap and in colors other than these, but even then we're not sure. The skirt's a little too poofy in the wrong places.

And let's face it, that bustier is too small and too sad looking. And the way she trimmed it makes it look a little Wonder Woman.
