Pink Lady

Out of everything that came down the runway this episode, this was our favorite, even if it wasn't without problems.

This is what people from Texas look like on Planet Gay.

Before we get into the dress - not literally, kittens - can we just say that we hated Julia's styling here? Jay honey, GLAM! You were trying to sell this to a major tv personality. Why is Julia made up like she's on the dessert committee of the Junior League? She looks bleh and we know she's capable of looking stunning.

Okay, with that out of the way ... two things Jay was doing a lot at this point (and which culminated in his Bryant Park collection) were the deconstructed layering of fabrics and the tone-on-tone, graduated colors thing. These just happen to be two things we really love and Jay does them well.

This may not be to everyone's tastes but we think it's gorgeous the way the colors all complement one another while bleeding into one another to make a whole that's a lot more than the sum of its parts. It's a unique effect and as we said, it was something Jay was really fixed on at the time.

We're not sew-ers (sewers?), but we would think that one would have to be quite talented to make a skirt layering so many delicate fabrics and still have it come out a well-tailored skirt. We know there are quite a few bitches-with-needles in our readership. Ladies, what say you?

As for the top, it would be easy to blame Kara Saun for this not working, but to be honest that was just an entertaining coincidence. While it's true that Nancy didn't like the color of the top, we're pretty sure she would have absolutely hated the original top, which was a much softer pink.

Jay just loves those buckle straps and he used them quite a bit all season, but they didn't work on this top. If it had been strapless, with a straight bustline and possibly not so long in the waist, it could have worked quite well. It's a shame really, because Nancy O'Dell would have looked fabulous in that.

Polly Poddie

Jaysus was way too hard on himself. We loved this. The logo, the way he used the lace, the belt, the masterful skirt - it all looked like old done new, which, since that was pretty much exactly the idea behind the collection, made him a contender for the win as far as we're concerned.

He kept characterizing this as a Holly Hobbie look but it's way more sophisticated than that. He has a gorgeous sense of how to do deconstruction, which made him perfectly suited for the challenge.

Loved the idea of the mood patch.

In fact, he was one of the few designers who actually followed the dictates of the collection. This is earthy, deconstructed and futuristic-looking. Exactly what it was supposed to be. It's something of a testament to how off-course the team was when one of the few people who was doing exactly what they were supposed to was the one freaking out and questioning himself the most.

The Best of the Rest

This was just okay, which is surprising coming from Kara Saun. The wrap is pretty, but the suit is just basic. And that bottom is poorly fitted. Looking a little Blue Lagoon there.

If she really wanted to be original, she should have sent this down the runway for the bridal gown competition. This would only be an improvement on Pam Anderson's last trousseau.

Props to Jenny for having the best body out of the models, though. Melissa's also got a killer bod, but Jenny looks fantastic in a bikini. Long and lean, with enough curves to make her look sexy and healthy.

We liked this. It was pure Jay. In what we surmise was something of a shock to him, Jay is actually quite good at marrying his aesthetic to the task at hand and always coming out Jay.

Love the straps and the bondage-y aspect of the whole thing, but we're not crazy about the wrap, which literally looks like he just wrapped some fabric around her waist.

And it's probably a good thing he did, because the cut on that bottom is all wrong. Way too Fruit of the Loom to be considered sexy. Judging by the various ass and cooch - fitting issues, it looks like making a bathing suit is probably harder than it looks.

Although apparently not as hard as figuring out how to put the damn thing on the next day. It looks like she got twisted up in a giant jockstrap.

Austin Scarlett, Man of Mystery

Girl, what the hell were you thinking?

"So, I figured, 'Why not shake things up and dress her up like a Chinese dragon?' I mean, when you think about it, it only makes sense, right?"

Before we get to the dress, can we just say...

...we hate the hairtits.

Seriously, what the hell? It's like, if Fred and Barney stopped off at a stripper joint on the way home from the quarry, this is what the girls would look like.

This honestly defies analysis. We still don't know what the hell he was thinking. It's just flat ugly and in no way even evokes the whisper of a wedding dress. More like a middle-aged barfly. On the starship Enterprise.

We'll say it.

She looks like she's shitting fabric. You just know Michael Kors said the same thing but they edited it out.

One of the very best things about Season 1, is the unintentional comedy provided by Heidi's rough-around-the-edges role as a hostess. We don't know what happened between Seasons 1 and 3, but we suspect it was something along the lines of Bravo sending her off to some kind of hostess boot camp.

Bitch had no idea she was even supposed to try to keep it off her face. We miss undiplomatic Heidi.

Oh and nice going with the rack-showing, girl.

Jaysus Chrysler

You'll have to pardon us, Kittens but this post is more than likely going to be sans bitchery. There's simply not a bad word to be said about this dress. In our opinion, this is one of - if not THE - most beautiful garments ever produced for the show, whether in the competition or on a Bryant Park runway. Don't take our word for it. The Chrysler Building dress is legendary among long-time Project Runway fans.

This is why we love the DVDs because we never even noticed the buttons on the back before.

Child, we fell out. We keep trying to write something here and wind up getting distracted by the extraordinary detailing and just sit here staring at it. This is a perfect example of a designer stopping at exactly the point he was supposed to. Objectively, there's a whole lot going on with this dress, but it's all so masterfully executed and thought-out that it all blends seamlessly.

We can say that we aren't crazy about the Carrie Bradshaw circa 2001 Big Fabric Flower, though. That's a little bitchy, right?

*sigh*

Everything about this dress is just so dead-on and such a testament to Jay's vision and skill.

And what made this so charming is at the time, he was completely unaware of it and totally taken off-guard by the judges' gushing.

The beauty of it is he managed to take his own point of view, which is in a different solar system than the one Banana Republic is in, and finesse it to a point where it completely fit with the client's own line while standing out from it at the same time. The one thing that tripped him up is the fact that this dress simply couldn't be manufactured at a Banana Republic price point due to the intricate detailing. Watching it again, we wonder if he was aware of that and was just trying to find a way to stay in the competition, but who cares? As far as we're concerned, he won this one.

The Rest of the Rest

Ew.

We guess it's supposed to be somewhat tongue-in-cheek but frankly, it's bordering on the vulgar and again, we're surprised the judges seemed to gloss right over it.

This is just a great big what the fuck. For some reason, the designers this season seem determined to do everything they can to make pretty girls look like scary clowns.

We just don't get it at all. Where's the "envy" part?

Hate it. Hate the rick-racky trim. It makes the whole thing look way too home-sewn. Once again, we have to ask: where's the envy part of this, Alexandra?

She's got it, yeah baby she's got it
I'm your Venus
I'm your fire
Your desire

It's just so bleh. So...undesigned. It's not ugly and it seems to be well-executed but when you're relying on the whickety whack to make your outfit, there's definitely something lacking in your design.
