Let's take a look at someone getting all couture-y off the runway and who better to do that with but the woman who was born to wear couture, Dita Von Teese.

She looks stunning. That dress is jaw-droppingly beautiful and she's wearing it like a champ (the corset no doubt helps). That little crumb-catcher on the skirt would look distracting and unnecessary on anyone else but since Miss Dita knows how to wear clothes, it blends in with all the other elements to make a pleasing whole.
Unfortunately, not every dress can look this good:

When we see it on the runway, we get it. We're not falling all over it like we love it, but we get the dress in that context. On Miss Von Teese? Not nearly so much. It just feels like too much dress when she's wearing it. A big black mass that she's carrying around rather than wearing. Plus, all that black lace and tulle is giving off an old lady vibe. Like something Bette Davis would have worn to the Oscars in her gaunt, crazy, last days. It's got "Lifetime Achievement Oscar" written all over it.
