Christina Hendricks for New York Magazine

Joannie secures her Queen of the Big Girls status.

Christina Hendricks is on the cover of New York Magazine baring (mostly) all and looking like a voluptuous lingerie-clad ice cream sundae:

Inside, she talks about the media focus on her body:

“It kind of hurt my feelings at first,” she says. “Anytime someone talks about your figure constantly, you get nervous, you get really self-conscious. I was working my butt off on the show, and then all anyone was talking about was my body!”

We kind of sensed that last year when we briefly interviewed her. It was one of those questions we had to ask or we wouldn't have felt we were doing our jobs, but we felt uncomfortable asking it. Not because we're prudes but because we would have much rather talked about her work as Joan and we sensed pretty strongly that she would have rather stayed on that topic too. But in pure Joan Holloway manner, she was game and dutifully answered our questions about how it felt to be the new poster child for the curvaceous woman.

Isn't it refreshing to see a major pair of tits that look like a couple of soft, inviting boob pillows instead of a couple of rigid tupperware bowls bolted on to her chest?

Whether she wants it or not (and with these pictures, it seems like she's coming to accept her role) Christina Hendricks has become a stand-in for the millions of women out there who want to see a body on their TV screens that looks more like their own. More importantly, she's sending a message that you can have a body like that and be unashamed, unapologetic, and most of all, sexy as all hell.
