Prabal Gurung Fall 2010 Collection

Checking in with this season's wunderkind.

The fashion world is a funny thing and sometimes it seems like the attention of fashionistas shift like the weather. Prabal Gurung is suddenly the name on everyone's lips this week and his show got rave reviews and major star power in the front row, with Anna Wintour, Zoe Saldana and Demi Moore (among others) attending. Let's see what the fuss is about, shall we?

One aspect of current fashion trends that we are completely over is the whole architectural, origami thing. But here's a collection that plays with those design elements while still maintaining a certain sense of welcome simplicity. The colors are lovely and there are some beautiful and interesting shapes here. Two criticisms: some of those peplums look a little overdone and we can't really applaud his fabric choices, which are not just shiny, but in some cases glittery and shiny. It tends to cheapen what look to be some extremely beautifully made clothes. Still, we can see why everyone's talking about him right now. After the relative crash and burn of Jason Wu (who is revealing himself with each collection to be simply not all that), this collection looks like the work of a designer who really knows how to make clothes both beautiful AND interesting.
