Rad Hourani's Unisex Line

Let's go off in a slightly different direction, shall we?

Specifically, let's talk about Rad Hourani. WWD has the details:

"A NEW SECOND: There’s a new name to add to the list of young designers who have introduced a secondary line: Rad Hourani. The move, he explained, wasn’t dictated so much by the economy as by his desire to expand his own wardrobe beyond statement pieces. “I wanted something I could wear everywhere, anytime,” said the Paris-based Canadian Hourani, best known for his experimental cuts and hard-edged rocker-Goth vibe. The approach should come as no surprise to those familiar with the former stylist — Hourani launched his main collection three years ago “for myself and my friends,” he remarked. “This is exactly the same thing.”

But there’s no denying that the timing happens to work in the designer’s favor. Wholesale prices for the diffusion line range from $100 to $300, while the core collection goes from $500 to $5,000. Though the two labels share a similar m.o. — a dark, urban palette and angular, unisex designs — Rad by Rad Hourani, available in stores and on his Web site come November, has a much lighter hand: languid T-shirts and draped jackets cut in organic cottons. “It’s still sleek and chic, but in a more casual way,” said Hourani, who still has plans to show his main line on Sept. 14 during New York Fashion Week."

LOVE. THESE. CLOTHES. They remind us a bit of the collections of Comme des Garçons and Ann Demeulemeester. Oh, we'd never wear them, mind you. They're definitely for the young, thin, and terminally hip, but they're so cool and so modern and forward-thinking. They feel like clothes that will become standard by the time we're old and rickety. Sort of how jeans and t-shirts were considered radical wear 50+ years ago and now they're practically a uniform. Which fits, because, like jeans and t-shirts, the clothes are unisex.

The line will be available in stores and on his web site in November, so if you're young, skinny, and hip, save your pennies.

Project Runway Season 6: Meet Malvin Vien

Malvin says he's "inspired by vagabonds, beatniks his travels in rural China, Japanese ghost stories and insect anatomy." Oh, honeys. We like this one.

Malvin Vien
Age: 24
Birthplace: Englewood, CO
Current Home: New York, NY
Favorite Designer: Himself (He likes what he has to say)
Style Icon: The farmers of rural China
Favorite Past Project Runway Designer: Jay McCarroll, Season 1

Malvin attended college at the University of Redlands, where he earned a degree in Social Medicine and Creative Solipsism through the University’s Center for alternative studies. He gained some of his early design training at the university’s costume department and later went on to study fashion design at Parsons The New School for Design. Malvin’s designs are inspired by vagabonds, beatniks his travels in rural China, Japanese ghost stories and insect anatomy. His fashion must is to have the courage to wear what makes you feel right.

Why he’ll win?
Malvin believes his designs have substance and a philosophy which separate him from other designers. He understands that fashion goes deeper than aesthetics, marketing or business.

Tim Gunn: "When you see this guy, you won't believe he's from Colorado."

TimSpeak: Look at the little podunk sew!

Aww. He seems sweet. Maybe we just have warm feelings for him because he had to grow up with the name Malvin. That couldn't have been easy.

As for his portfolio, there's not a lot out there, but we do like what little we see. That print dress is gorgeous.

Check out more of Malvin on his myLifetime.com page.

And a reminder that if you want to speculate on the finale collections, please take that discussion to the finale collection posts which you can find on the scrolldown menu at the bottom of the page.

In or Out: Amy Adams

Amy Adams attends the "Julie & Julia" premiere at the Ziegfeld Theatre in New York City in Carolina Herrera.

We can't wait to see this movie!

Carolina Herrera Resort 2010 Collection
Model: Taylor Kraemer

Admittedly, the neckline on this one is kind of strange and unflattering, but it doesn't take away from the overall effect of the dress. Amy Adams is one of the few actresses in her age group who can really bring it, old school glamour-style (Anne Hathaway's another one). As distracting as that bib is, she still looks fantastic. Love it when an actress wears a print on the red carpet. The gold clutch seems like a strange choice for that dress, but again, we can't nitpick too much because when you take in the whole look from head to toe, it's impossible (for us, anyway) to say anything but... "IN."

Kate Winslet in Harper’s Bazaar US

Watch us put our foot in it, darlings!

The lovely Kate Winslet is in the latest issue of Harper's Bazaar looking fab and putting herself down again.

Michael Kors Fall 2009 Collection
Model: Anna Jagodzinska

On her breasts:
"If people are noticing my boobs in a movie and saying they do what real boobs do, then that’s great. I’ll be 34 in October. I can’t keep getting away with it… people have seen enough of my bum and my boobs. I have to put them back."

On the speculation about her weight:
"I’ve heard, 'Oh, she's toned and she's lost weight,' but I am exactly the same as I’ve always been. The one thing that had to go during awards season was exercise. People would say to me, ‘Oh, come on …' like I was lying about it! Some may find it hard to believe it, but I don’t care about that stuff."

On being the face of Lancôme:
"I really thought, me? Seriously. Because I think what you feel like as a teenager never really goes away. If you were teased for being fat or thin or having bad teeth, you're always insecure about that particular area of yourself. So I've never thought of myself as any kind of beauty, iconic or otherwise."

Model: Valentina Zelyaeva

Jacket: Burberry London; Bracelet: Cartier; Rings (worn throughout): Kate's own.

Jacket: Yves Saint Laurent; Briefs and fishnets: Wolford; Shoes: Prada; Bra: Kate's own.

Jacket: Blumarine

Pictures? Gorgeous. Clothes? Ditto.

Okay, here's where we say something that will probably get us in trouble. Let's start off with this: we ADORE Kate. We always have. We think she's one of the great actresses of her generation and we think she puts forth a very likable personality to the public. We say "puts forth" because there's no real way of knowing who celebrities really are and the only thing we have to judge them on is the personality they choose to show the world. Kate has chosen to adopt the "ugly duckling who became a swan but still thinks she's an ugly duckling" persona. Which, good for her, because it fits and knowing what little we know about her life, it's probably largely accurate (or was at one time).

But here's the thing: she just won't SHUT UP about the fact that she used to be a little chubby and insecure about her looks. Kate, we GET IT, now could you please get the hell over it? It's one thing to adopt that persona when you're an up and coming starlet, but you up and came a long time ago and after countless magazine covers and editorials and award-winning performances, this schtick of hers is coming off as....well, schtick. At this point it's seeming to us like a somewhat cynical ploy to endear herself to the public rather than a true reflection of her feelings.

When editors and stylists and makeup artists and photographers and designers are falling all over themselves to make you look good and when you apparently cheerfully surrender yourself to their talents, you forfeit the right to be taken seriously when you go ON AND ON about how you're insecure about your looks. You're beautiful, Kate. Clearly, TONS of people think so. Just own it and enjoy it. You'd probably be doing a lot of those insecure girls out there (whom you're obviously trying to get on your side) more good by showing a little self-confidence rather than sending the message to them that no matter what they do, they're always going to feel bad about how they look.

In or Out:: Gwyneth Paltrow

Yikes.

Preen Fall 2009 Collection
Model: Edita Vilkeviciute

It's not a bad dress, but for some reason it's not the dress for her. It's not very flattering and she's not wearing it well. We just want to walk up to her and yank the skirt into place. Of course, that would probably get us arrested, but we'd have public support on our side during the trial since most of the public would like to walk up to her and at the very least pull her hair or maybe just get in her face and yell at her. Oh, sorry. We got sidetracked. So the dress looks askew and ill-fitting, the hair looks like she just came from a water aerobics class, and the personality (or, more accurately, "personality") is a complete turnoff. OUT.

The booties are cute though.
