Christian Siriano Fall 2009 Collection

"
Christian Siriano's Fall '09 RTW collection takes its inspiration from the natural beauty of the Egyptian landscape. The golden tones of the desert and the pyramids are brought to life in the form of sculptural, but feminine sportswear. Sophisticated with a touch of drama, silhouettes featuring rich teal and turquoise recall the waters of the Nile."

The word that comes to mind here is "smart." The looks are, for the most part, basic with a twist. Some we like, others we don't. Can't get more basic than that. Looks we liked: a couple of the jackets and coats and the welcome pops of blue, matching the blue on the soles of his Payless shoe collection (bitch knows synergy, we'll give her that). Things we didn't like: some of those little cocktail dresses looked awfully familiar, if you know what we mean, and he returned to the puffysleeve/ruffled bodice well one too many times.

Here's the twist: we think this collection shows real growth for him because he's clearly thinking about the client instead of going off on flights of design fancy. By offering a range of separates that'll fit a range of bodies - instead of the procession of skinny-girl-only offerings he'd previously shown - he's sending a message that he's a designer who can roll with the times, broaden his base, and continue to gain his share of attention.
