Adorable widdle Zac Posen and his adorable widdle cheeks did some sort of fashion thing last week.
"For Fall, he enlisted The 5 Browns—a brother and sister piano troupe—to play on five Steinways arrayed down the middle of the runway, and he sent out a collection of forties-inflected Victoriana. "They were both times of sculpting clothing," he said a few days before his show. Focusing mostly on dresses, sculpt is what Posen did: grand Joan Crawford shoulders, pouf sleeves, ruffles at the hips, and great swags of fabric pooling on the floor at the models' feet—in notice-me fabrics like metallic jacquards, violet moiré silk, double-layer floral prints, and a gingersnap plaid."
We have to applaud him, because at a time when so many in the industry are putting on their sackcloth and ashes in tribute to the economy (a gesture that grows increasingly insincere with each person that tries it), Zac is out there, still having fun with it.
We don't know how well these looks are going to transition to the racks, but we don't care. It's exuberant, and glamorous and colorful and in pure Depression-era style, he's reminding us that when times look bleak, a little luxury is a welcome sight, even if it is a mirage.
